The squawk of chooks contrasts with the distant din of sirens at East Perth City Farm Organic Growers Market.

The modestly-sized farmers market is on every Saturday between 8am and noon.

You can find organic fruit and vegetables, olive oil, macaroons, cheese, honey, eggs, spice mixes and even organic dog treats.

My daughter enjoyed seeing the chickens, while having a free go at 'fishing' courtesy of West Coast Steiner School.

The vibe is very laid back and community focused, while every available surface – even rubbish bins – has been decoratively painted.
Brightly painted bins.

The volunteer-run farm grows produce on an organic permaculture basis and is currently home to an experiment in using leftover coffee grounds to grow gourmet mushrooms.

Founded in 1994, the farm was once a heavily degraded scrap metal yard and battery recycling plant before being taken over by the Planetary Action Network.

A bit of the country - in the city.

The City Farm is also host to a popular solar powered café which we'll be back to try another day, perhaps a weekday when the crowds are likely to be smaller.

The café is open Monday to Friday 7am to 4pm, and Saturday 8am to 12.30pm. The farm is open Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.
The cafe draws a crowd on Saturdays.
