Perspectives:Asia is a series of free public seminars developed and presented by the Griffith Asia Institute (Griffith University) and the Australian Centre of Asia Pacific Art (Queensland Art Gallery) to explore issues of contemporary culture, politics and society in our region.

The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to lead a Commission of Inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea.

The subsequent 'Report of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea' was released in February 2014.

In this seminar, Michael Kirby will speak on his role as head of the UNHRC commission. He will shed light on the history of the region and the challenges currently facing the Korean peninsula.

He will discuss how this Commission used public hearings and encouraged ordinary Korean citizens (many of them escapees from North Korea) to tell their stories. The result is a unique insight into the region.

Prior to the seminar, Michael Kirby will be signing the biography Michael Kirby: Paradoxes & Principles by Professor AJ Brown, School of Government and International Relations, Griffith University (available from the Gallery of Modern Art bookstore).

NB: There is currently a waitlist for attendance at this event, so register your interest ASAP. With such strong interest, organisers are hoping to provide an additional live webinar, so watch this space for updates.
