As luck would have it, the cost of hiring a personal trainer in Sydney does not necessarily mean harvesting one or more of your organs. Recently, the city has been ranked the third healthiest in the world, and as a newcomer, I have observed the culture of exercise, activity and lifestyle followed by Sydney-siders.
It only became a matter of time before I laid down the pastry and took up the dumbbells to join the hordes of shapely bottoms. In my quest for the ideal Kim Kardashian curvature, I did some research and experimentation.
One of the most accessible fitness centers in the city is at the University of Technology, Sydney. The gym is situated just opposite the ABC building and is open not just to the UTS community, but also to the general public. Its two main advantages are the centrality of the location and affordability of personal training packages.
The UTS Fitness Center offers a personal training service at $55 an hour and $35 per half hour, and a general membership (3 or 6 months) that allows for unlimited access to all of group exercise classes (Body Pump, TBT, Body Blast, Spin and several more). Whether or not the gym's advertising that speaks of the stringent criteria in the selection of their trainers needs to be read with discretion, and my faith lies in solid evidence. The university recently reported on the gym's focus on the application of personal training not just in relation to injured persons, but also those with lifelong disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

Enliven Fitness is run by Michael Wilson and allows for the selection of group and personal training classes. He runs all of his classes in the outdoor area in Wentworth Park near to the Bay Street and Wentworth Park Road junction. Working out in the great outdoors definitely has its perks – a fabulous tan, fresh air and a changing landscape.
At Enliven I have opted to do the group training session with a good mix of men and women, and what I really enjoy is the variation of exercises using strength building equipment (kettle bells, TRX bands, barbells). Furthermore the emphasis of balanced cardio and resistance makes sure that I feel ashamed of even the most remotely unnecessary calorie. Michael has experience in working with people with a range of physical injuries, and he gave me a tailored workout so as not to aggravate my back pain.
Enliven Fitness offers a range of packages. Personal training currently costs $75 per hour, or at a discount of $70 per hour when a set of 10 classes are purchased.
Vix, the Bondi Vixen trains women only at her fitness sessions at her location in Bondi Beach and claims exceptional loyalty from her clients, some who have been with her for over 15 years. Women have the option to train personally, in a duo, trio or group, with varying price ranges.
For the traditional one-on-one personal training basic package of 10 sessions, it costs $90 per hour and includes a diet plan, fitness assessment, loyalty card, referral key rings, t-shirt, and the Bondi Vixen newsletter.
The great thing about going to a gender-specific trainer is that he or she would probably have a certain amount of expertise in niche areas. For example, Bondi Vixen offers additional advice on body shaping and hormonal balancing in women.
