Take a risk on a unknown comedian this year
perri cassie, comedian, melbourne, funny, things to do

On a cold, wet and windy Sunday evening, a group of comedy enthusiasts showed up to the Tea Room, located at the Chinese Museum, ready to be entertained. It was one of those nights where the front row stayed empty, but like a professional, Perri Cassie kept the show going and at times even sarcastically referred to the room as being totally "lit", allowing him to produce some funny one-liners and stray away from his rehearsed routine.

In a fairly snug black denim overall, a baby pink jumper, blond short haircut and round friendly face, he reminded me of a children's TV host gone wrong, but in his own way still managed an adorkable persona who you really want to succeed. Like many comedians, Cassie had a beverage on the side of the stage. Cassie's liquid of choice was a frothy beer which added to his drowsy expression, leaving the audience wondering if he was feeling tired or perhaps slightly intoxicated (the pink lighting did not help in this instance), but to stand out as a comedian they all need a unique style and this is his.

Throughout the night, Cassie came up with some clever insights about his work life and love life. His day job working in retail and turbulent relationship with his boss provided some great material, including the time he was accused of being "almost" late for work when he clocked in at 9:55 for a 10 o'clock shift. Cassie's ability to flow from one chapter of his life to the next was flawless and well thought out.

The titled of the show 'Secondhand Bubblegum' did not get much of an explanation. If you do not pay attention to the posters or description, you might miss the theme entirely.

'Secondhand Bubblegum' will certainly make you feel better about your own awkward moments in life because Cassie's life experiences at times are much worse, but hey, at least he can laugh about it now right!

Being the final week of the Melbourne Comedy Festival, it would be a great time to check up some up and coming new shows and Cassie is certainly a comedian to watch.
