Performance: Untitled (Death Song)

Many moons ago, when in high school, we were asked by our art teacher to listen to the notes and harmony of a particular musical piece, meditate on it and create a painting on canvas that echoed through the notes to us. Going back to 1976, this was probably a little bit advanced for a group of country grade twelves, as not one of us captured exactly what he was looking for. Being much wiser and understanding the connection music can bring, the idea seems much more feasible now.

On Saturday 17th April 2021, a group of musicians will be bringing to their audience " Untitled (Death Song) ", which is a range of extended musical techniques developed by instrument builder Isha Ram Das and Liquid Architecture Curator Joel Stern and sounds from Megan Cope's installation of sound sculptures constructed from discarded mining and industrial equipment. Tickets are FREE and can be booked through Eventbrite here .

The composition takes its first note from the haunting cries of the yellow-eyed Bush Stone Curlew . The Bush Stone Curlew is an endangered species in New South Wales and it is known for its eerily call, which is often mistaken for a crying baby or wailing women. Living in Queensland, I mainly hear them at night but they can call at any time of the day.

In the Quandamooka Culture , they are known as a harbinger of death, although has also been known to mean new life, new beginnings in different cultures.

Do not miss out on this thought-provoking and meditative composition, which will take you on a spiritual journey. Let your mind be the guide.

This event is being held at the UNSW Galleries , corner of Oxford Street and Greens Road, Paddington, NSW
