After a long, busy day there is nothing better than sitting down to a good meal and a beer without having to pay an arm and a leg, and now you don't have to! At Pepperoni's (Elizabeth Street), you can choose from a variety of foods including pizza, pasta and porterhouse steak. Moreover, if you don't have the time to sit down and eat you can get the meal take away or even delivered!
Now, I normally love sitting down to a fourteen dollar chicken parmigiana with chips and salad, but that's the problem – it doesn't come with chips and salad. It only comes with chips and if you want the salad, you have to order it as an extra. This has never been a problem in the past, however, the last time I was there my friends and I proceeded to order it with chips and salad and when our meals arrived, the salad did not. When we complained about not receiving the salad the man who appeared to be managing the place told us that it didn't come with salad. After we told him that we were aware of that and that was why we ordered it with chips and salad, he said that we should look at the menus, which we did not, and that he assumed we "didn't know what [we] were talking about". As much as I love a fourteen dollar parmigiana, plus the extra for the salad, I won't be returning to Pepperoni's unless the man who served us is not working because, quite frankly, I do not appreciate being spoken to like I am a twelve year old girl. He was rude and I do not wish to deal with him again when all I want to do is enjoy a nice meal. What happened to 'the customer is always right'?
Other than the service, there are a few more negativities about Pepperoni's. Although it is an extremely laid back restaurant the only drinks you can buy come in bottles. This isn't a problem until you want to share it between you and your friends and you have to buy a 1.25 litre bottle of soft drink. The glasses, which are sometimes glass and sometimes plastic, as well as cutlery, are placed in the middle of the restaurant for patrons to take as needed. Personally I am not a fan of this but I can see how it is convenient. However, at Pepperoni's it is hard to be sure whether the glasses are clean. They almost always have water on them and in them. Moreover, the napkins that your cutlery are wrapped in always seem to be damp which only makes wiping your face a little more uncomfortable.
Although there are several undesirable facts about Pepperoni's, they do serve delicious food and have newspapers and a TV for entertainment. If you're in town and want a cheap meal, head to Pepperoni's if you don't mind unfriendly staff and damp napkins. If you are staying somewhere in Carlton, Docklands, East, North, South or Central Melbourne, Richmond, Southbank or St. Kilda Road Central then you can dodge the negatives and have this wonderful food delivered, and you can even order it online.
