Relax at Pepper Street Arts Centre
Located at 558 Magill Road, Magill, the Pepper Street Arts Centre is situated on the site of the former Magill School. The site has been associated as an educational institution since 1846 when a half-acre block was given to the Magill School Trust to be used for the education of students within the district and a school room was built.

In 1856, additions were made to the school room and a residence for the master was added due to increasing enrolments. By 1882, as enrolments continued to increase a new building was added.

In 1960, the location remains listed as the Magill Primary School. By 1990, the building had been acquired by the City of Burnside and was officially opened as the Pepper Street Arts Centre on 29 October 1995.

Today this fantastic heritage-listed building is noted on the SA Heritage Places Database as "external form and fabric of 1880s former school building".

The Pepper Street Arts Centre is an arts and cultural initiative which supports creative endeavour and excellence, promotes arts appreciation and education and provides for social engagement across the artistic and wider community.

The centre offers a range of fantastic opportunities for the creatively minded or those who simply like to observe the works of those who are. Free monthly exhibitions offer the opportunity to experience diverse and exciting collections of the works from a variety of artists and art media. The exhibition space is located in a spacious double classroom which has retained the character of the old school house.

Visitors can enjoy free and regular artist demonstrations held either in the Exhibition Space or in Dorrit's Coffee Shop on Saturday afternoons between 2 pm and 4 pm. These informal talks are offered to all who wish to attend and are an opportunity to watch artists at work and ask questions. They are not a prepared tutorial or lesson and as no bookings are required, attendees cannot be guaranteed a space or a seat but take the opportunity to arrive early.

For those wanting to be a bit more hands-on, art classes are offered for children and adults with ongoing, long and short term class choices in general drawing, general painting (acrylics, oils, watercolours and mixed media), mosaics and more. Some classes are offered on a seasonal basis. School holiday programs are also offered.

The Centre offers a range of fantastic opportunities for artists through themed group exhibitions, artist of the month, gift shop, workshop tutoring and artist demonstrations.

The Gift Shop has a fantastic range of gift ideas or purchase for yourself. Artists can request to become the Artist of the Month and profile their work in the Gift Shop. Information on the current Artist of the Month can be found on the website.

Dorrit's Coffee Shop is a relaxed café style space where you can relax alone or with friends. Staffed by Pepper Street volunteers, the coffee shop was opened in recognition of Dorrit Black (1891 – 1951), an Adelaide artist who was pre-eminent in the fight for modernism and one of the first women to direct an art gallery in Australia.

The coffee shop serves a range of reasonably priced drinks and treats and welcomes individuals or groups (up to 15 people) for morning or afternoon tea or a light lunch. Bookings are essential for groups and can be made by emailing pepperstreet@burnside.sa.gov.au or by calling 8364 6154. Opening hours are Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4.30 pm and Saturday 12 pm to 4.30 pm.

Become a Pepper Club member for a small fee and enjoy discounts on gift shop purchases and selected exhibition items, discount in Dorrit's Coffee Shop and member only exhibition previews.
