Romswood Peony Farm has cancelled its annual November open days but you will still be able to go and pick your own. Marco Polo described peonies as: 'Roses as big as cabbages.' And peonies do have the visual charms of roses due to their delicate buds, that then unfurl into blousy blooms.



Located in Kerrie, in the Macedon Ranges, Romswood Farm has been growing peonies since the mid-1990s. The cool climate of the region creates perfect peony growing conditions, echoing those of the imperial gardens of China where the peony originated and continues to be revered as a symbol of peace, stability, distinction and wealth.

You will see both herbaceous and tree peony varieties and the grounds boast many other beautiful examples of flowers in bloom as well as stunning trees. The sheer size and the vibrancy of the colour of the flowers is something to behold.

Romswood is thought to have Australia's largest variety of peonies and here is your chance to pick your own. If you choose buds to take home, you can watch them unfurl into immense, blousy blooms.



Limited to 50 people per 2hr session. Unfortunately because of Covid restrictions, even children will be counted and will need a ticket! (Children under 2 exempted)

Please BYO secateurs if you have any. They have some, but not 50 pairs.

Fully ticketed event $50 per head for 20 stems. If 20 isn't enough, extras will be charged at $2.50 a stem

Hand sanitising, social distancing and masks will be required.

**
• Peonies are highly venerated. Known as "sho yu" in China, meaning "most beautiful" they have been grown there for over a 1,000 years.

• They symbolise riches and honour and have long been used as floral symbols in Chinese art and poetry.

•They also embody romance and love and are regarded as the omen of good fortune and a happy marriage.

• Red peonies are considered a most auspicious colour, but peonies are available in almost every colour. The most common colours are pink and white.

• They are often referred to as the King or Queen of Flowers.

• Peonies grow natively in Asia and Europe but can be grown in Australia in cooler regions. They need a cool climate and frost to grow to their full beauty.

• They only bloom from late spring to early summer so it is a matter of catching their fleeting beauty while you can.

• There are many types of peonies, approximately 30 species in total, with over 3,000 varieties.

• Peony plants are known to live a long time, up to 100 years so are also associated with longevity.

• Some plants can give out as many as 100 blooms in a single season, and one plant could give up to 10,000 blooms in its lifetime.
