Bringing a bit of hidden life back to Union St comes Penny University, a just-bigger-than-a-hole-in-the-wall breakfast bar that packs a lot of potential into its tiny premises.

Penny University is easy to miss but not easy to forget. Situated just across the road from Burger Theory it provides one of the best people watching seats in Adelaide. You've got your Ebenezer Place hipsters, Sass & Bide snobs and city suits walking right past your cappuccino.

It opened earlier this week and already has a constant stream of curious new customers lining up to try the East End's latest haunt. Although it wouldn't take much for there to be a line out the door seeing as the inside is about the size of a mini van.

The menu is an interesting mix of Shakshuka (a one pan sausage with green peppers, tomatoes & baked eggs), Corn Fritters, Banana Bread and Maple Roasted Muesli as well as the classics of French Toast and Poached Eggs.

The limited space they have is well used. Jars of nuts, muesli, grains and oils line the walls like a Ye Olde Lolly Shoppe.

The coffee was up to the standards held by all new coffee places in Adelaide, brewed with detailed knowledge of the beans & respect for the delicate process of making a good cup of coffee. The French toast was made with a lovely fat bread that was light and chewy and it was served, like the banana bread, with a tangy and gloriously pink rhubarb compote.

Out the front they have a display of colourful salads, sandwiches and sweets to entice the hungry lunch walker, which you can see being made as you walk in. The staff are friendly and laid back which adds to the relaxed and cosy atmosphere.

Penny University is the perfect place to go to get a light breakfast or lunch and watch Adelaide stroll by. It would also be a great place to take someone that is new to Adelaide, or hasn't been for a while, and show them what it is all about.

People that live in Adelaide drink and eat well. We have places like the Barossa Valley and the Central Markets ingrained in our culture and if we continue to demand high standards and to show interest in new and exciting places like this we can make a real difference in Adelaide's ever blossoming food, wine and coffee scene.
