I have to confess that brunch is probably my favourite meal of the day, even if it's at 1pm! It's worth depriving yourself of, especially if it's huge and delicious. Discovering a decent breakfast eatery is not an easy task.

Penny Farthing Espresso has recently been introduced to me by a friend. It is a small, quaint cafe on High St in Northcote. She has raved about the breakfasts there for some time now, so one Sunday we jumped on our bikes and rode to High St for a dining experience.

After being seated in the jam-packed, busy cafe we examined the menu. They have a large assortment of dishes and add their own flair to normally ordinary meals. Two of my friends and I ordered the avocado smash. It came out as a generous helping of chunky cubes of avocado mixed with feta, mint and basil on two thick slices of sourdough bread with chilli slices in olive oil as an accompaniment. Describing it now makes my mouth water! I also requested a side of mushrooms which came interestingly sautéed in balsamic vinegar.

My girlfriend ordered poached eggs with a side of ham and mushrooms, which was scrumptiously made. Looking around the room
I peered at other patrons' meals, all of which appeared equally as impressive. One omelette I glanced at was presented folded over salmon, on top of a tomato and bocconcini paste spread over sourdough toast. All the prices for the menu items seemed very reasonable, ranging from $5 for toast to $18 for the some of the bigger meals. Although this may seem a bit pricey for some, the size of the meals definitely made up for it.

Coffee-wise, I think the same owners roast their own beans under the name Industry Beans. My girlfriend ordered a soy flat white which arrived with both stunning presentation (a tulip on soy is an impressive achievement) and silky smooth taste. They undeniably know how to make a great coffee. Other coffees I witnessed were served with immaculately artistic presentation. Even by watching the barista slave away behind the machine, you could see the care and precision only a connoisseur of coffee would articulate.

I highly recommend Penny Farthing Espresso as your next destination when in need of breakfast. They also offer lunch and dinner and when perusing the menu, seemed matched in quality and taste. They offer fantastic coffee, friendly service and a bustling atmosphere. Please try this place. You will not be disappointed.
