Well worth your investment in the morning
Known for its vibrant plethora of budget-friendly Asian eateries, Box Hill in Melbourne's east is known for attracting foodies from all over. Sensing a gap in the market for modern Australian brunches and coffees, however, saw the owners of The Penny Drop open their doors on the ground floor of the new ATO building on Whitehorse Road.

The Penny Drop is always busy on weekends as well as the weekday morning rush. Thus, weekday mornings after 9am remain the best time to visit this vibrant café if you'd prefer to slowly linger over your morning latte and brunch without feeling rushed. The café itself is gorgeous; high ceilings and muted earthy tones create a timeless and contemporary space, while polished chrome and timber fit-outs add a little sparkle to the space.

A seasonally inspired menu boasts a range of modern Australian flavours with Asian twists here and there. Their popular potato and garlic waffle, for example, comes with poached eggs, grandmother ham, hollandaise and wakame seaweed. Meanwhile, The Penny Drop's version of morning pancakes is bursting with spring onions, served with confit shredded duck, bean shoot salad, jasmine tea marbled egg, sweet onion caramel and tonkatsu – the perfect indulgent breakfast.

A lunch menu is also available from 11:30am featuring classics such as pasta, salads and burgers. The Penny Drop also offers a short dinner menu for those who don't want to set foot in a kitchen from Wednesdays to Saturday. And because The Penny Drop is fully licensed, after-work drinks can be had here – just choose from a list of local wines, beers and ciders.

The Penny Drop also caters to customers who are in a hurry; there is takeaway coffee service as well as a display cabinet full of ready-made sandwiches, paninis and sweet treats to take into work (or home) with you. If you do have time to spare, however, I recommend you dine in, enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and admire the beautiful space with your crew.
