"We express what we can as best we can and different people see different things in what we create." Simple words spoken by the curator of
Mornington Peninsula Regional Art Gallery . In fact, it is this statement that put me at ease as I looked across the room at the group of people who had come to celebrate the opening exhibition of the
Peninsula Studio Trail (PST) artists. I am not an expert of Art. In fact I have stepped into a gallery approximately 3 times in my 28 years of life. When contemplating a trip to a gallery, a small voice inside my head says, 'What's the point? You're not going to 'get' it.'
But the words spoken above made me realise that artists are just people trying to get a message out there. And there is not one single message to 'get'. Because what I see when I look at their work won't necessarily be the same thing the person next to me sees. What I think won't be the same thing the person next to me thinks. And that's OK. In fact, that's the point. There isn't a hard and fast formula when viewing and commenting on art. It's a personal experience – so there is no need to be an expert. And there is no need to be intimidated. Art is simply there to be enjoyed.
With this in mind, I perused the art on display freely – not an expert, just a person with my own unique insights and opinions. And while I couldn't detect flawless brush strokes and fantastic use of 'Impasto', I could appreciate the immense passion behind the works. And of course, the incredible talent.
So come down to the
PST exhibition at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, which is on until the 2nd of June, to view the wonderful artwork created by the PST artists. If you really love a piece of art and want to see more by that particular artist, simply pick up a brochure at the front desk, contact them and then visit them directly at their studio. And don't ever feel intimidated by galleries, art and artists. At the end of the day, the works have been created by people who are simply trying to express themselves. And although it may be through differing mediums, isn't that what we all try to do everyday?
