A cellar door just 15 minutes from the city?
No, you don't have to venture out into the Barossa or Clare Valley to experience some of South Australia's best wines. The Penfold's Magill Estate is only 8km away from the CBD but gives the same sense of rural luxury that you get from any winery - except even better.
The Magill Estate Cellar Door is open from 9am-6pm every day and offers tastings of an array of Penfold wines. The range starts with a transparent white, ends at blood red, and includes everything in between. The joy of tasting becomes even more arousing for the senses when guests turn to look over the stunning vineyards that spread out across the front of the building.
If you're anything like me, you'll love a generous dose of good hospitality and this cellar door is most certainly where you will find it. The friendly staff were incredibly knowledgeable, capable of answering both my amateur wine-related questions and the testing questions of the wine-enthusiast that stood next to me. Although the staff were not pressuring for guests to purchase any wines, my taste buds definitely were!
However, the Magill Estate offers much more than just tastings. It is well worth paying the $20 for the 45 minute tour around the winery which gives insight into the interesting history of Penfolds in Magill. On the tour, your host will send you on a historic journey through the vintage, underground cellars - and show you where they hide their most secret wines! The tour also permits you to see more of the prodigious, elegant buildings that make up the winery.

There's even more to tempt you at the Magill Estate, as the Magill Estate Restaurant is conjoining to the cellar door. For a stunning fine-dining experience, the neighbouring eatery offers small or large meals, or platters to share. The menu is boasted to have the greatest contemporary food in the state and pairs exquisitely with the Penfolds wine. When the weather is fine, it is ideal to take a seat outside and enjoy your time with a view over the city of Adelaide.
