I don't know about you guys, but I'll quite happily take a healthy dose of quirk with my morning coffee. Our local coffee love definitely fits this bill - with a name like how could it not?! At this point I would like you, my lovely readers, to be aware that I am letting you in on a local secret here at great personal peril. I enjoy a leisurely coffee here a number of times a week, so please don't go and make it too busy for me!

So let's start with location. This lovely little cafe nestle's itself on the second floor of a boat shed. It sits on Weinam Creek and overlooks beautiful Moreton Bay - and a slipway. I used to think that the slipway was a special breed of industrial mess, but I must admit I'm now a convert to its nautical charms. If you, heaven forbid, happen to get sick of staring at the beauty of the bay and its myriad of bird life then you can watch the ship builders doing what they do best, which is in itself an art form.

Whilst priding themselves on being general purveyors of caffeinated goodness and scrumptious sweets, Pelicans also do all day breakfasts and lunches seven days week. My family has been doing the coffee and cake thing there for years, but today is the first time I finally decided to take the lunch menu for a test drive.

My personal choice for the day was the vegetarian tart. Mushrooms, egg, pastry and cheesy goodness, what isn't to love on that front. There was even a beautifully crisp side salad to make me feel better about myself. At a mere $12 I could do very little to criticise this meal, short of saying that perhaps the tart itself could have done with a little more seasoning. It was on the whole, however, beautifully presented and tasty

My mother went for the chicken and bacon open panini. She also thoroughly enjoyed her meal. I have to say what a delight it is to finally find a cafe that seems to appreciate a proper bread-to-filling ratio on their open sandwich range. After finishing our meals we both suffered a major case of lunch envy towards another table who had ordered the Pelican's Catch of local prawns. At least I know what I'm ordering next time!

Pelican's offers a wide range of coffees, milkshakes, smoothies and fresh squeezed juices. If you feel as though you need something a touch more special with your lunch (or breakfast) choice you can always opt to BYO bottle of wine. All the meals are exceptionally reasonable in price and there is even a function room upstairs that would be delightful for a small party or gathering. If you are interested it is also well worthwhile following Pelican's on Facebook as they often have special themed events throughout the year. You can even do your yoga there!

The staff are always a pleasure to deal with and I think that gets me to the real core of why I like this place just so much. Its got a genuinely joyful little soul to it that is often hard to come by in the suburbs. You get a real sense every time you walk through the door that the whole establishment is a labour of love and that, to me, is priceless.
