In my quest to try all restaurants that serve PEKING DUCK in Perth, I came across one in Northbridge.

[b]PEKING DUCK is also known as Beijing duck or just Chinese roast duck. While most dishes change dramatically over hundreds of years, [b]PEKING DUCK has remained much the same as it always was, with the method of cooking it having altered over the ages. The ducks are mostly hung after being cooked and are now generally cooked in this hanging position, and they always have that glazed, crispy look about them.

[b]PEKING DUCK** is a dish that originated in Peking and the meat is famous for its thin, crispy skin which is put in a Chinese "mushu" or pancake and rolled up. Added to this, you put in some spring onion, thinly sliced celery and a Char Sui sauce. This is always assembled at your table by your waiter and in this instance our waiter, who was a bit camera shy, happily spooned the food onto our pancakes with dexterity and ease.

Having not been to Northbridge for a meal for at least a year, I decided to try this restaurant as it looked delicious online. Finding a parking spot was not a problem, which is normally why I avoid Northbridge. However the parking cost over $6 for 1½ hours which I think is way too much for a place that relies on people eating there. However, it did not dampen my anticipation of once again eating one of my favourite meals, [b]PEKING DUCK**!

The Hong Kong Barbecue House is a clean, pleasant restaurant, and we were served within a minute of sitting down. We ordered a Chinese tea to begin with, and as we knew what we were there for, ordered the [b]PEKING DUCK immediately. Of course, they are already cooked and in the window by lunchtime and although their menu says they need 24 hours notice for [b]PEKING DUCK, they were happy to serve us with it.

[b]PEKING DUCK** can often by ordered by a half duck or a full duck and consists of two courses, and sometimes three. We chose a whole duck. In this instance it was two courses, and the first course is my favourite with the pancakes.

I have not seen the legs presented on the plate like this before, and it was a delightful idea with the crispy skin, and the tender juicy meat. The good thing about this [b]PEKING DUCK** is that it was not at all fatty. The skin was wafer thin without the fat that is often served with this meal.

After bringing the plate to our table, our waiter then put a pancake on each of two plates, balanced them while he put the Chair Sui sauce, spring onion, celery, and the duck skin itself on each pancake.

We had six each of these pancakes, which would normally be enough for me for lunch, but being greedy when I have this dish, we went on to the second course where we had a choice, and chose SAN CHOY BOW using the rest of the duck meat from our duck. Once again the first one was assembled by a very shy waitress who definitely did not want to be in a photo.

We then rolled the filling up inside a lovely crisp lettuce leaf and ate with our fingers as I could see no way to eat this with chopsticks!

By this time, I had difficulty breathing as we had four of these lettuce rolls each, and had each eaten half a duck, plus pancakes, plus vegetables in the san choy bow. Needless to say, we did not have dessert.

The place itself has fish tanks when you first walk in and they had crayfish, fish, and crabs in their tank. However I do not like this practice as I don't think I could eat an animal that I had just seen swimming around.

The Hong Kong Barbecue House is situated at 76 Francis Street, Northbridge, and you can see more at their website .

It is licensed, and we did not have a booking as we went for mid week lunch. The cost for this delightful meal was $68, making it a reasonable price for an excellent meal.
