Inspired by the Japanese art of Butoh, renowned performance artists Yumi Umiumare and visual maestro Jacqui Stockdale will be your guides on this exciting journey, suitable for children aged 3 to 12 (but all are welcome) and their families! Dive into a world of imagination by joining an enchanting workshop where dance, mask-making, and creativity come together. Get your tickets here to events on Sat 7 and Sun 8 October 2023 from 10am to 11.15pm (one session per day) at Abbotsford Convent , Industrial School, 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford.


Presented by Convent Kids , join in playful rituals to summon Kooks and Spooks through Butoh. Get ready to move, shake and make funny shapes with your body, as you jump headfirst into a world of imaginative spirits. ButohOUT! is the only creative platform of its kind in Australia focusing on the distinctive art form that has woven its way into the fabric of the Melbourne art scene since 2017. It celebrates diversity and authentic expression with a vision for a radically inclusive artistic practice. Butoh dance exploded onto the Japanese stage in the early 1960s with themes of darkness that have evolved into being expressed according to the vision of the artist creating the performance.


The facilitators - Yumi Umuimare was born in Japan and is an established Butoh dancer and choreographer and has been creating her distinctive style of works for 30 years. Jacqui Stockdale is based in Melbourne and is a multimedia artist known for her figurative paintings, drawings, staged photographs, collages and vaudevillian performance. She is drawn to the human condition, engaging in folklore narratives, masquerade and anthropological complexities.
