Whether it's catching up with family or friends or taking a break from shopping, the Peacock and Peony Cafe at Mitchelton provides a warm retreat to refresh, re-charge and re-engage.
Located in the food court of Brookside Shopping Centre Peacock and Peony Cafe offers a warm and open space to enjoy breakfast, a light meal or a beverage.
What's in a name? The first thing that caught my attention about the cafe is its unusual name. Then I remembered that the combination of the peacock and peonies appear in Asian art and culture. In Chinese culture, a peacock and peony flowers represent a person's wish for a merry and blessed life. They also regularly appear in Japanese ceramics on teapots.
It made me wonder whether this sentiment is what inspired the name of the black and white sign above the entrance which marks you have arrived.
The DecorFor those familiar with Brookside, the Peacock and Peony Cafe is located opposite Aldo's Barber Shop, something of a local institution in Mitchelton. The cafe has been styled in a Scandi and industrial style with a colour palette, of black, and green with wooden furniture which gives a warm and cozy look. The Arum lily plants and ferns on the tables add extra greenery and the assortment of fashion magazines is a nice accompaniment to some quiet time to relax.
Seating is available in booths along the back wall, bench seating, and traditional tables all designed for conversation and finding some quiet time alone.
The dimmed, overhead lighting gives the cafe a slightly dark and moody feel. The cafe is particularly popular with mums and bubs in part perhaps because the tables along the outside of the cafe offer ample space to easily park a stroller.
The MenuNow to ordering. Peacock and Peony offer an all-day menu that can be ordered at the counter. The giant chalkboard wall offers a summary of some of the cafe's menu offerings like thirst-quenching juices, and breakfast staples.
Favourite breakfasts like Granola bowls, Eggs Your Way as well as something a little different like Fried Eggs Bene with Chilli Maple Sauce, Chilli folded eggs, and Tofu scramble all spark interest. There is also a selection of burgers: steak, vegan, and karrage chicken.Don't forget to take a peak inside the cake fridge
As I was making my way towards the counter, I noticed an empowering motivational statement written across the top of the chalkboard along the back wall to boost your mood and bring confidence to your day.
It reads:
Not everyone will like you and in most cases, their distaste isn't even personal so stop letting their triggers determine your worth.Wow. That's not what I was expecting. This small cafe is more than just food.
Peacock and Peony's also offers smoothies, fresh juices, a kid's menu and Campos coffee. To support the environment, the cafe offers the incentive of a 20-cent saving for those who bring their own keep cup. It's good for the environment and good for your wallet. They also have a policy to not serve takeaway cups to dine in customers.
The StandoutOne of the most special and unique features of the café is the specialty teapots and the golden teaspoons on the side of each hot drink. They are very decadent and elegant and bring some
ooh la la to a mere cup of tea.
Overall, my visit to Peacock and Peony Cafe was filled with pleasant surprises. It is one of the more sophisticated cafes in the complex away and is worth paying a visit to. If not for sipping tea from a beautiful teapot then a motivational message may just spark your day.
What Else?Peacock and Peony is open 7 days. Free parking is available in Brookside Shopping Centre. Public buses stop at the Centre and the Mitchelton train station is one street away.
