No trip to Memphis is complete without seeing the
Peabody Hotel duck march.
The
Peabody Hotel is a grandiose 1920s hotel located in downtown Memphis. The ducks march twice a day,
11am and
5pm, across the lobby to a musical fanfare. It's a tradition that's been going for 90 years.
A 11am the ducks waddle out of the elevator, down a red carpet to hang out the fountain of the hotel. At 3pm, the reverse happens. The ducks are gently herded in the right direction by a "Duckmaster".
When they are not playing the hotel fountain, the ducks live the high life in a rooftop penthouse.
The fountain is located in the foyer next to the bar. Follow the signs to locate it. Get there early to secure a good spot as it gets crowded. An alternative option is to buy a drink at the lobby bar and sit near the red carpet.
It's kitschy and cute. If nothing else,it's an excuse to use all your corny duck-related jokes.
