Would you like to try a motivating boot camp?

I have always wanted to try a boot camp but was afraid that there would be lots of yelling and running up hills. After attending my first class, I am happy to say it was a fun experience and not at all what I expected.

I woke up super early in the morning with my gym clothes and sneakers already out. I packed a towel and water bottle and headed out the door. The PCYC at Everton Hills is near us and there were plenty of parks out front.

I filled out a casual membership form and was ready to get started. I saw a group of people already working out at the gym. The boot camp class was located at the back of the building behind the boxing room.

Boot camp is held two days a week from 6:15am (check the website for current times and days). Gideon Mzembe (first photo) is a trained fitness specialist and he leads the classes. He promised me there would be no yelling and no minimum fitness level required. He has the philosophy that you do whatever you can do within the time frame.

Gideon started the class by showing us the moves and then using a timer on his mobile phone as he counted us down. He was good humoured and motivating throughout the class. I found myself pushing past my usual boundaries and doing moves I would never attempt at home while doing a fitness DVD.

The boot camp class can take up to 40 people (with two instructors) and there is plenty of room to spread out. Some of the lesson was held under cover and some outside on the grass.

We did some bodyweight exercises which is where you use your body as the weight rather than using fancy and expensive gym equipment. The boot camp is based around a time based circuit so we did exercises like star jumps, bear crawls, push-ups, squats with a medicine ball, 'horse' kicks, and running and jumping through a ladder (on the ground). Gideon gave us tips on practising good form and it was reassuring to know that your knees and feet are in the right place.

I felt energised and great after the class. I was surprised how quickly the endorphins kick in. I thought I would be really sore, but I recovered quickly.

The best thing I discovered is that PCYC are for all aged people, not just youth. The Hills District has great facilities and classes, such as box fit, Pilates, yoga, various martial arts (aikido, judo, jujitsu, muay thai kickboxing), basketball, badminton, futsal, hip hop dance, gym membership and programs for school age kids.

The cost of classes and membership is incredibly affordable. If you are looking for a genuinely fun and motivating way to get fit check out your local PCYC for boot camp classes.
