I love going out for breakfast in Woolloongabba but had never tried Pawpaw Cafe until this weekend. In fact, we were heading for Foxy Bean Cafe across the road, but ended up parking outside Pawpaw and were tempted in. With a wall of windows which open up onto Potts Street, it almost feels like you're in the open air and it was seeing the buzz inside from the road that looked so appealing as we approached on a rainy day.

The decor is a warm mix of wood, concrete and glass, with subtle accents of Bali and Thailand. The atmosphere is relaxed and you could easily while away a few hours on one of the large sofas reading the newspaper over brunch.

Pawpaw caters well for couples, families and larger groups as there are regular tables as well as a long wooden bench with stools which would easily seat twelve people around it. The cafe is family-friendly and the waitress was quick to produce a high chair and some cups of water without us having to ask.

Breakfast and lunch menus are served all day. The basic menu was at first glance fairly standard with the regular egg combos you might expect. I was initially a little disappointed not to see a more Asian influence in the dishes. However, there is a blackboard full of specials which change regularly and these were much more adventurous.

I chose the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, which was served on a poppyseed bagel with prosciutto. The vertical presentation was appealing and the flavours of the crab worked really well with the creamy sauce and the toasted bagel. It was unusual and and unlike anything I have tasted elsewhere in the City.

They were more than happy to put together my daughter's off-menu request of a croissant and poached egg and presented it nicely with some fresh berries.

My husband enjoyed his breakfast wrap and was particularly impressed with the Campos coffee .

All in all, I would highly recommend Pawpaw for a great brunch although parking is limited on a busy day. They also run Thai cooking classes which look fun. On the basis of our great breakfast, I'm also keen to try out Green Papaya which is the award-winning sister Thai restaurant next door.

is open every day until 3pm. Check out their Facebook page for more details.

NB: PawPaw Cafe has recently had a major overhaul in 2015. Another review can be read here .
