Every country town has a bakery and Inverloch is no exception. The exception is the size. Paul the Pieman's, A'Beckett Street shop would be the largest bakery I have seen.


Before you enter, you are aware that you are entering the home of prize-winning pies and pastries.


At the 2021 Great Australian Pie Competition, Paul brought home nine medals. They were awarded a gold medal for their Brisket, Mac and Cheese pie. Four silver medals for their Cauliflower & Chickpea pie, Honey Chicken pie, Pork & Bourbon pie and their Cheeseburger pie. Four bronze medals for their Plain pie, Classic Sausage roll, Chunky pie and their Fruit mince tart.


Most country bakeries that I have visited all seem crowded, even when there are only a few customers. At Paul's, a queue is formed and everyone is served in turn.


On my first visit, we ordered pies to eat in. "We only serve them in paper bags, but you are welcome to sit at the tables to eat them." We did and I was impressed by the speed at which a long queue was served.


I also ordered a coffee and later asked the resident barista, Max, how many coffees a day he made. "Too many," he replied, before adding, "But I love it."


The illuminated menu display behind the counter makes your mouth water before you even look at the pies.


Apart from the pies, pasties and sausage rolls, a huge range of cakes, pastries and tarts await to be devoured. I counted at least ten of my favourites.


A range of bread and rolls are also available.


A display of local honey looked very sweet and I noticed family-size frozen pies ready to take home.


A nice artefact was a model baker's delivery tricycle.


I managed to get Paul to pose for a photo in front of some of his handiwork. Handiwork that he can be justly proud of.
