This may sound like an old cliché, but from my findings, G. Patritti & Co Pty. Ltd. is a contender for the title of Adelaide's Best kept secret for the following reasons.

My guess is most readers would not be aware that this winery is:

  • Adelaide's oldest family owned winery and cellar door.
  • Caretakers of possibly the oldest suburban commercial vineyard in the entire world.
  • A James Halliday five star rated winery.
  • The first winery to ever win Gold for a table wine made from the Saperavi grape.
  • More renowned locally and overseas for its range of de-alcoholised wines and premium sparkling grape juices.

  • And possibly, the biggest secret of all is, where is it?

The answer: Patritti Winery is hidden away in a housing estate in Dover Gardens, only 3 - 4 minutes from Westfield Marion. Surrounded by suburban homes and a park on one side, it operates a production facility, packaging line and cellar door on the original site where it was established in 1926. Some people mistake the premises for a factory, but this incredible cellar door is just like you would find in McLaren Vale or the Barossa.

In the late 1950's the State Government compulsorily acquired a major part of the Dover Gardens vineyards. Today, the Patritti family supply their growing wine business from their own premium vineyards at Blewitt Springs and Tatachilla, as well as sourcing from small vineyards from small vineyards from various growers - some located in the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley.

I was fortunate enough to hear about Patritti Winery several years ago from friends who live close-by. We share a common interest in wining and dining, and we soon found that this Adelaide winery offered a variety of outstanding wines to satisfy our tastes.

Recently, I was invited to visit Patritti's winery to tour their premises and taste some of their wines. Although Patritti are more known for their premium juice and de-alcoholised products, I particularly enjoyed their alternative varieties that are new to Australia and are creating a lot of interest with wine lovers. Being the dedicated writer I am, I took some of my 'work' home with me to continue tasting and evaluating with my friends over a meal or two over the long weekend. Below are my findings.

Arneis Adelaide Hills 2010 Gold Medal 2010 Mildura.
The variety originates in Northern Italy where Giovanni Patritti, the founder of Patritti Winery came from. Everyone enjoyed this subtle wine and found it very easy to drink. It was also well suited to our main course of smoked trout with Asian vegetables
    Price: $14:00 750ml.

    Savagnin Adelaide Hills 2010 .

This variety originates in France where it is best known for producing dry sherry-like wine style. It was introduced into Australian vineyards under the belief that it was Albarino - before the error was discovered, some very good wines were made and this uniquely Australian dry white with depth and flavour should be celebrated. It was easy to drink and was enjoyed with a chicken dish.

    Price: $14:00 750ml.

    Barbera Adelaide Hills 2010

This light red has the full flavour you might expect from a full bodied red. Well suited to Italian meals. We enjoyed it with a steak dish.

    Price: $16.00 750ml.

    Saperavi Barossa Valley 2011
    Gold medal Sydney Wine Show

The Saperavi variety originates in The Republic of Georgia in the former Soviet Union where they have a few hundred varieties suited to winemaking. It is like the Shiraz of Georgia. The variety has adapted to the Australian climate and conditions beautifully and makes a unique style - quite different to the Georgian Saperavis.

As far as we know, Patritti are the first Saperavi producers to win a gold medal for this variety. A great result considering there are only 10 wine makers in Australia producing wine from this variety.

It is an interesting tasting wine that is showing great potential and is bound to improve with age. It is well suited to be enjoyed with matured cheese or red meat dishes.

    Price: $16:00 750ml.

The Alternative Varieties are also available in 3 packs where you can select 3 wines from the 5 varieties, which will cost less than $50. They make a special gift for family, friends or business associates, who may be wine enthusiasts and typically enjoy expensive wines. These packs make a unique gift because chances are they would not have received all of these varieties before.

I am sure you will find, as I did, that Patritti is currently releasing wines of high quality at bargain cellar door prices, some are practically the wholesale price.

With sufficient notice, social groups can book tours through the winery and can enjoy tasting their product range at their cellar door. Their Facebook page shows incredible imagery of the Patritti winery and vineyards - www.facebook.com/Patritti Wines photography by Patritti's winemaker Ben Heide.
