In their fiftieth anniversary year Harbour Theatre, Fremantle's original community theatre, will be bringing Patrick White's classic Australian play The Season at Sarsaparilla , to a new audience in July and August. Set in the fictional Australian town of Sarsaparilla in a steamy 1961 summer the play examines the lives of three families over the course of a few days.

The Season at Sarsaparilla is one of eight plays written by the Nobel Prize-winning White, considered by many to be Australia's greatest novelist and one of the greats of 20th century English literature. It's a play that examines in minute, humourous, and sometimes confronting detail what percolates beneath the apparent 'ordinariness' of a suburban life. White himself called it "a play of shadows rather than substance". At its heart it's a satire, but it's also a character driven comedy that explores eternal themes of love, loss, desperation and desire.

Harbour Theatre's version of White's classic but not often produced play will be directed by the award winning Peter Kirkwood. When Kirkwood was asked why he chose this play he said, "I have directed a number of great Australian classics such as Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, The One Day of the Year and No Names No Packdrill over the many years I have been involved in community theatre and feel that The Season at Sarsaparilla is another one of these great classics.

The stories all have one thing in common - they resonate with audiences who recognise parts of themselves and the people they may know in the characters. The Season at Sarsaparilla is no different – it is a powerful and funny play with strong and challenging characters played by a large cast of only the highest calibre."

This Harbour Theatre production, presented in conjunction with the Patrick White Literary Estate, features Fremantle local Michael Dornan as Clive Pogson, and the award-winning Nicola Bond as his wife, Girlie. Other familiar faces include Ann Speicher as Nola Boyle and Trevor Dhu as Rowley Masson. Talented newcomers include Darcie Azzam as Pippy Pogson and Paris Doick as Deedree Inkpen.

It will be a rare treat to see a community theatre production of White's masterful and insightful portrait of Australian life in arguably simpler times, but with themes that are clearly still relevant today.
