A deliciously low-key affair in
Elsternwick , Passport World Food cafe has a menu full of breakfasts and lunches competing for your tastebuds' choice.
Just off the main shopping strip on Glen Huntly Road, Passport is a much quieter experience than other cafes nearby. While the atmosphere was relaxed, the service was reasonably speedy. When my friend and I went for a late lunch, there were few other customers. Indoors there sat an old lady who was leisurely reading the paper as she dined on a huge plate of pasta, and a woman with a young child who seemed to know the friendly owner. Outside were a few stragglers who read as they ate in the breeze.
The menu is only about a page long, but there's a bit of everything on there. True to their name, Passport have appropriated a variety of cuisines, particularly Middle Eastern, into their offerings. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, so most of the menu is comprised of wholesome breakfast food, although there are a couple of heavier options such as pasta.
Wanting a light lunch, I ordered the ham and avocado toastie, while my friend ordered the cheese and tomato toastie.
I was surprised that my toastie did not have cheese in it - I had thought that cheese was a key ingredient. Apparently not. The ham and avocado toastie was more like a sandwich on toasted bread, not that I was complaining. While my toastie was fairly small, it was enough to satisfy. They didn't scrimp on the ham or the avocado, though the avocado could have been fresher.
The total for our two toasties, a hot chocolate and a Coke Zero came to $21 - certainly an affordable lunch compared to some of the nearby options.
Passport's eye-catching decor added to the international experience. While the floor-to-ceiling windows flood the cafe with light, there are also chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. There are a few musical instruments hanging off the brick interior for deocration, alongside an assortment of canvas prints representing different cultures.
