The City of Casey celebrates Australia day in style. With several events happening throughout the different suburbs, there are plenty of events for residents to attend and wave their flags and display their patriotism to our beautiful country. One of these events to be held on Australia Day 2014 is being organised by CHARM (which they have been organising for the past few years now).

Who or what is CHARM? CHARM is an acronym for Cultural Historical Association of Rodriguans and Mauritians (in Victoria), a community that is extremely proud of its heritage and holds Australia day events to celebrate all things Australian.

This year, the event which is charmingly (no pun intended) being called Passport to Casey's Cultural Heritage Showcase will be held at the Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne on Sunday 26 January 2014 from 11.00 AM - 4.00 PM. The event is free for all to attend.

Having attended this event previously, I can safely say that the show is well organised, with an afternoon filled with performances from various cultural and community groups. Music, singing, dancing, reciting, etc. are all part of the extra-ordinary performances. Apart from what happens on the stage, there are other activities too, including a FREE sausage sizzle (Australia Day without a BBQ is just not possible), food tastings, traditional music/dances, drumming, a mini historical photo competition/exhibition, art and craft, free children's activities and more. Many who attend wear traditional costumes and dresses, proud to share their cultural heritage as Australians. The venue has a small park for children to expend their energies on.

One of the highlights of this event is an address by an Australia Day Ambassador, and this year, the Ambassador who will be speaking is Nyadol Nyuon, who came to Australia as a refugee in 1995 from Southern Sudan. Since arriving in Australia, she has studied law and is engaged in the community addressing issues relating to the youth, women, and has taken many initiatives to improve society at large.

If you plan to attend this event, don't forget to check out the Wall of Friendship located next to the Balla Balla Centre. Nearby, you will also find the Cranbourne library and the Casey RACE (Recreational and Aquatic Centre). Not far is the beautiful sports complex and park called Casey Fields. Stay for a while, or make a day trip but remember to mark this event on your calendar, because you will be talking about it for weeks and months afterwards. You will not only take memories when you walk out the venue, you will also have found new friends who uphold the values of being Australian.

Happy Australia day.
