Pepper Street Arts Centre at the top of Magill Road has regular exhibitions. I recently visited the current selection of works in the gallery space, entitled "Passionate About."
The name was chosen as the artists have a passion for the media they work in. And it goes without saying, they are passionate about art. Some of the artists have been trained in art studies, while others are self taught and have become experts in their passionate form of expression.
The exhibits are mainly made from textiles, such as wall hangings, and hand dyed clothing. There are some mosaics and basket weaving as well. Many of the works are made from felting natural merino wool. The felting has been made into clothing including waistcoats, capes, hats, and pictures. I was intrigued to see so many different ways to use fabric and felting and all in such vibrant and fun colours. If you prefer a more subdued and natural look check out the naturally dyed T-shirts, dyed with plant sources.
Artist Felting Demonstrations
On the following weekends artists who are exhibiting at this event will be showing you just how it is done. I watched some artists doing felting and they make it look surprisingly easy. I am now inspired to give it a go. The demonstration takes almost the whole two hours, but you could pop out and have a coffee or browse the exhibit during the demonstration if you wish. But things change very quickly and then suddenly, the work has been magically finished. So be there towards the end.

This exhibition has such high quality work and I felt the prices were reasonable. And many of them are practical as you can wear some pieces or use them in your home. And every item would make a great gift. There is always one of the gallery's artists around the place and it is interesting to hear about their work. I talked to artist, Jennifer Gunson who described what her blue framed feltworks meant to her. These are the view of Lake Eyre from the plane. Can you see the swirls of blue water surrounded by salt. I moved closer towards the small framed piece. "Yes, yes I can", I said. If she had not told me what it was, it would have been a blue blob to me. Artists are just fascinating people, don't you think?
