Do you love theme parties as much as I do?

I think themes create a great atmosphere, whether it's for kids or adults. Dressing up is fun and there are great ideas out there.
I always have a hard time choosing a theme but always end up with something fun and creative. So here are some of my top party themes. I've done some of them myself but some are ideas from parties I had been to.

I'm sure you'll find a theme that will get you thinking.

Surely you'll love one of these five theme party ideas!

Setting up everything for a couple of days in advance is fun, even if it lasts only a night. So you better get started on the decoration if you have chosen your theme.

Also, if you are looking for costume shops here are two suggestions I think are the best in Perth: Walk the Plank Costume Hire and Jingles Fancy Dress Hire.
[SECTION]Hollywood[/SECTION]
Ever wanted to be on the red carpet on the arm of a handsome actor, or felt that you were surrounded by hidden paparazzi? With a Hollywood party you'll definitely feel like a star.

The Hollywood theme gives many party possibilities for decoration, entertainment, food and of course dress up ideas.

Costumes:
First of all set the theme of the Hollywood theme. You could ask people to come as movie characters or actors, or you could specify a movie genre (action, musical or western) or era (silent movies, black & white, talkies) or to make things easy just don't be too specific, it's your choice.

Party Supplies & Decoration:
The most important decoration for this theme party is the Hollywood sign. If you forget that, your party will not be a success.

Secondly, a red carpet with a backdrop photography banner. You could hire a photographer to do the red carpet photos. Entrance is everything, so make sure to have that red carpet and ask your guests to strike a pose for the camera as they arrive - that will give you lots of memories and you can even send out the photos after the party.

You could also add a big award statuette somewhere around the venue, along with some movie clipboards here and there. Maybe hand out a small statuette to the best actor/actress (best dress up costume) at the end of the night with a little prize.

For a more Hollywood/cinema effect, stick to black, gold, red or silver for a more elegant feeling.

Food ideas:
The food should be as glamorous as the theme. Champagne and martinis are a Hollywood must, and finger foods will work well with this theme. Finger foods can include things such as a cheese platter, olives, dips and mini sandwiches. Add some small bite size desserts, some people prefer sweet than savoury. For example, chocolate dipped strawberries, small profiteroles or even mini tarts. If the party is for a birthday then you will need an amazing Hollywood cake .

[SECTION]Cartoon Characters, Superheroes and Villains[/SECTION]
This theme party is great for both children and adults. You can find cartoon or superhero costumes almost everywhere. But you better be original and chose a character that you think no one will chose, that will prevent having to many Batmans or Supermans.

Costumes:
Ask your guests to dress up as their favourite cartoon or superhero character, or even a villain! If you have no ideas for a costumes, here are a couple, but you can just head to a costume store and they will have plenty to suggest.

But here are some original ideas from the top of my head;

Female cartoon or superhero characters: Betty Boop, Jessica Rabbit, Wilma Flinstone, Tinkerbell, The Powerpuff Girls, Minnie or Marge Simpson, Avatar, Smurfette and of course you have the usual Wonderwoman or Catwoman.

Male cartoon or superhero characters: Barney Flinstone, Wolverine, Captain America, Mickey, Woody (Toy Story), The Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Hulk, Tarzan and of course you have the usual Batman, Superman and Spiderman.

Finally, here are some great female or male villain characters: Venom, Captain Hook, Cruella de Vil and the Queen of Hearts.

Party Supplies & Decoration:
You should be able to get a lot of ideas out of this theme, but here are a couple of ideas. First of all, this is a cartoon or superhero party, the unique idea I can come up with for this theme is definitely a must. Try getting a good spotlight and stick a Batman sign over it, so when you light it you will have a Batman symbol on your ceiling or wall.

Next on the list should be posters. You need pictures of superheroes and cartoons on the walls of your venue. Either make them yourself or just buy comic book magazines and cut them out. If you have a black light, it would be good to place it somewhere strategic to create a nice effect, maybe with a fog machine or dry ice.

And finally, if you have a small TV set that you could set up outside, you could play cartoons or superhero animation on mute in the background.

Food Ideas:
If you're good at baking cakes you could do superhero cupcakes with Batman or Superman icing decoration.

Finger food will go well with this theme too (actually, goes well with any kind of events), but here you could label each finger food platter with a super power. For example if you have a carrot/cucumber with dips platter you can label it "X-ray Vision", or tuna sandwiches will give you "Catwoman powers", mini pizzas for 'Ninja Turtle Powers".

For an adult theme party, you can organise some cocktail bowls and stick to the labels again. For example you can serve Red Bull and Vodka will "give you wings and mind control", a cocktail mix punch will give you "fire power" or "invisibility power".

Just think and be creative.

[SECTION]Double Trouble[/SECTION]
Twin parties must include double fun, double guests and double excitement! Of course this doesn't have to be a party for actual twins, it's just a theme.

You can also turn this theme into a twins or pairs theme for example, that will broaden the theme a little.

Costumes:
Think one, Think two!
Ask all the guests to come by pair and be dressed as twins or a pair characters.
There's a range of possibilities there.

Here are some examples for twins: twin Smurfs, the Olsen twins, Dumb & Dumber, Thomson and Thompson (Tintin) or Tweedledum & Tweedledee (Alice in Wonderland).

Pair examples: Wilma & Fred Flinstone, Asterix and Obelix, Caesar & Cleopatra, the sun and the moon, Mickey and Minnie, Popeye and Olive or even something funny like the Queen & King of Hearts (or any other suit) or Bacon & Egg.

Party Supplies & Decoration:
A couple of ideas come to mind for this theme. Maybe hang some mirrors everywhere in the venue, that will create a great doubling effect! Get a Polaroid camera and take photos of each twin or couple as they arrive, and give them the photo as soon as it's ready.

Design one half of the venue in any way, with shapes and fun things you would find maybe at a carnival or something, and design the other half of the venue the exact same but opposite.

Food Ideas:
You can have basically anything food and drink wise. Finger foods such as carrots and cucumber with dips, olives, little savoury cakes etc.

Just keep in mind to double up on everything. Maybe organise half the table and organise the other half the exact same opposite. Like looking in a mirror.

[SECTION]Around the World[/SECTION]
For this theme, if you can't find any inspiration, I would suggest you go to a local supermarket and head to the international food section. Just check out the colours, packaging and designs, I'm sure you'll find some inspiration. If that doesn't help then here are some ideas you can use.

Costumes:
This is an Around the World theme, so asking people to dress up shouldn't be that difficult. Think about all the countries in the world, find one you like best and dress up the same way they do there.

Lets take India for example, you can dress up in a Sari if you're a women, for men they have those white blouses and trousers with a turban. Take China, you can dress up as a Geisha, or a Chinese Emperor for the men. Take Mexico, buy a bottle of tequila and wear a nice sombrero and a poncho that will do the trick!

There are millions of costumes ideas for this theme, and you can easily make your own.

Party Supplies & Decoration:
You can do something simple and let the food and music speak for the party theme, or you can do some research and bring in elements of different cultures into your decoration.

When I think of 'Around the World', I think flags and maps, nothing speaks to this party quite like flags and maps. They make great wall covering and are very colourful. You could also have a map or flag as a tablecloth. Maybe even place a big map of the world in a strategic place and ask people to place small dots in all the places they have been.

Mix different traditional decorations from different cultures to get that international style going. You can have a little bit of everything everywhere or you can create different culture themes in different areas of the venue. Maybe an Indian style room with sparkle cushions, a Japanese room where people sit on the floor, a beach area, a European room with the Eiffel tower and other European monuments.

And of course don't forget to get some good worldwide tunes to get people dancing.

Food ideas:
This party is a lot about the food and drinks. The purpose here is to highlight the cuisine from around the world.

You can either decide to do it yourself which will require some research, or to make it easier, if your friends comes from different cultures you could just ask each of them to bring something from their home country.

Prepare special cocktails, which could represent different countries. Add to that different beers and maybe a wine tasting area.

[SECTION]Go to Prison[/SECTION]
This is a fun theme idea even though it doesn't involve as much costumes as the cartoon and superhero theme.

Costumes:
Ask everyone to dress up as anyone you could find in a prison. You have prisoners (you'll have a lot of those) but keep in mind that there can be different types of prisoners. So think about orange outfits, black and white striped outfits etc. Don't forget to have a number on you. Just do a little research for the different kind of prison clothes.

You also have cops of course, and guards. Then you could have a name tag, Sergeant xxx or Officer xxx. You could be an FBI agent or something from a special force unit. Maybe look up Alcatraz or other famous prisons and you'll find lots of ideas.
**
Party Supplies & Decoration**:
When you think of prison. It's all dark and sinister.
The first thing you should set up at your venue is the entrance. Create a jail bar door maybe in cardboard, or something hard like that.

In one area of the venue, place two backdrops for photos and don't forget to ask a professional photographer or ask a friend to be the photographer for the night. One white backdrop with the prisoner holding his number, and one normal dark blue backdrop for the others.

Food Ideas:
It could be fun to serve things on aluminium trays like they do in prisons. Create a 'cafeteria area'.

Place finger foods on a table and label with prison names such as "Alcatraz dips", "Warden cakes" or 'the Isle of Wight delights".
For cocktails and other drinks, do the same thing, label them with creative prison names, maybe of famous prisoners.

Finally, use plastic cup for drinks, that will also make cleaning much easier.
