5 Wonderful Parks in Ashfield

One of the things I love about Ashfield is its parks. They are all unique with their own special stories - some more difficult to unearth than others. From sports fields to playgrounds, and small parks, squeezed into nooks - often passed by and under-appreciated. Here are 5 of the best parks in Ashfield:

Allman Park

This cute park-on-the-corner is wonderful for its modest, but attractive flora. This is the best park in Ashfield to be in when the sun is setting, as the sunset always somehow looks prettier from here. The generous garden beds of lavender and rosemary mean there are always a lot of bees at this park. And the attractive circular design of the paths and central feature make for a pleasant stroll.



The park is in fact used more as a thoroughfare by local residents, linking the main street of Ashfield to the back streets of Summer Hill. The unique feature of this park is the wide area that has been created to one side, which big enough for a large family picnic. Two picnic benches have been erected beside each other in a cozy nook, making for the kind of spot perfect for an extended-family picnic.


Explorers Park

This park is one of the unknown small gems that is well worth the visit. Located on a narrow strip of land flanked on two sides by busy roads, it is an educational spot to take a stroll.

Pratten Park



Pratten Park is used as the local sports ground with soccer and cricket matches being held on weekends. The park is not really a picnic spot, but its still lovely to sit on one of the benches and have lunch in the sunshine. The park is home to some interesting artistic features and is also the location of the Thirning Villa , built in 1868.



The villa is now used for the Ashfield Council's Artist in Residence at Thirning VIlla program . It is also home to the Ashfield and District Historical Society who work to promote interest in the heritage of Ashfield and preserve information relating to it.

Grass courts being something of a rarity in Sydney, the front of Thirning villa with its grass tennis courts holds historic importance. It has been the location of a number of matches with famous players including Davis Cup star Ken Rosewall .

Ashfield Park

Ashfield park is the most notable park in Ashfield. The park has a number of uniquely interesting historical features and there is a soccer field and lots of space to stroll. Phoenix palms are spread about the park and there are lots of other shade-giving trees perfect for lazing under during a picnic. Overall the park is a spacious and pleasant spot for exercising or relaxing.



Yeo Park



Yeo Park stands on the original site of Hurlstone Agricultural College on the outer reaches of the Ashfield area. It was named after former mayor of Ashfield John Yeo , who served the Ashfield Council as an alderman for 18 years and as Mayor from mid 1917 to late 1918.


Broad grassy areas are perfect for kite flying, throwing a ball around or laying on the grass. There is a small play area for children and the Yeo Park Infants school is located conveniently on the park - great for mums before and after picking up the kids.
