There's no better way to start your weekend than with a run or walk. (How else are you going to justify eating all those coffees and cakes later in the day?) Parkrun Australia have organised 11 different tracks across South Australia where you can have your run timed. Each track is 5km long and the runs kick off every Saturday at 8:00am. And guess what? It's free!

The locations that have been set up are at: North Adelaide (Torrens), Christies Beach, West Beach, Clare Valley, Lochiel, Mount Barker, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge, Renmark, Strathalbyn & Victor Harbor. On an average week, each separate location will have between 50-200 runners/walkers. So, whether you're a Usain Bolt or a snail, there are bound to be others around your running level.

The Torrens run in North Adelaide typically attracts the highest number of runners. This course begins at the River Torrens Weir and follows directly next to the water, passing an array of riverside fauna along the way. But, for me, the only thing that beats the river is the ocean. The West Beach parkrun is held on the esplanade footpath and having the sea so close makes it easy to cool off after the run. Every different parkrun has its own unique scenery. You're never limited to just one location, so why not try a new run every week?

South Australia has a very friendly and diverse running community, so if you're eager to make new friends and be encouraged, Parkrun is the place. After each run, most of the participants meet together at a nearby cafe to relax and recuperate.

All you need to do to join in the fun is visit the Parkrun Australia website and sign up. Once you have done that, you'll be sent a barcode via email which you will need to take with you on Saturday. A parkrun official will scan your barcode before your run and from there, it's all up to the muscles in your legs.

To find out where exactly each parkrun begins and more information about the weekly event, head to Parkrun Australia.
