I am a writer seeking to boldly go where lots of other people have gone first so as to be absolutely certain no possible danger is lurking around a corner.

Want a butt you could bounce a coin off?

If you're anything like me, you're a bit of a lazy sod. Dinner in front of the telly, the car instead of the train and a lapsed gym membership. Well no longer I say! Because this weekend my friends, we are going to stuff our wobbly bits into lycra and we are going to puff, sweat and wheeze our way around Park Run, a five kilometre timed run held every Saturday morning at 7am.

But that's too early! I hear you cry. Nonsense. Well, all right, not nonsense, 7am is very early. But think about it. A five kilometre run first thing Saturday morning offers you the gift of a guilt free weekend. Imagine.

"Want to go for a walk darling?"

Oh I would my little sugar bunny, but my legs are sore from Park Run - you know, that five kilometre timed run I did this morning."

Oh yes. The one where you looked up the Park Run website to register for the run nearest you."

Yes, that's right, and you know Park Run is held throughout parklands and bike tracks all over Australia, and overseas too, although in colder places it starts a bit later. All I had to do was print out a barcode to take with me so they could record my time as I dashed across the finish line."

Pumpkin! I'm so proud of you. Have you looked up your time yet? They post them online after the event, don't they?"

They sure do my sweet little caviar on toast. They post your time, your overall position, your age group position and they keep track of your personal best."

Sugar plum! Is there anything Park Run cannot do? Do you think I could come with you next week?"

Darling, we can even take the kids."

And run them like greyhounds! Now you rest there while I massage your aching shoulders. Shall I fetch you the remote control?"

It's easy to register for Park Run.

Go to, and don't forget to print out your barcode.
