With budgets tightening and prices rising the last thing anyone wants to do is pay just to park their car on an ordinary piece of land. Unfortunately with almost every inch of parking being controlled by councils or greedy companies such as Wilson, free parking is pretty hard to come by. So here's a few tips to save your hard earned cash.

Park at the train stations
This is probably the most obvious one, and by far the easiest. If you're commuting anywhere along a train line it is going to be A LOT cheaper than paying upwards of $4 an hour to park your car. Train station parking is free, there is plenty of it and in many cases it can make your trip a lot quicker as well as saving on fuel costs. Even when parking is full you can usually park around the fringes of the station no worries.


Park just outside car park compounds
Companies such as Wilson force you to pay 24/7 no matter what your circumstances are, even if your only planning on being five minutes the minimum charge is $4! If you happen to need to park after hours you can actually park on the verge outside their compound. The verge is not owned by them, and most councils are always fine with people parking on verges after hours.


Empty Space
If you are parking somewhere such as Subiaco, Claremont, the City, Northbridge etc. always take note of empty blocks. They are never checked by authorities and it is 100% legal to park in many of them. No one is going to complain about someone parking on an arid piece of land!


Business car parks
On weekends and nights many business with "for ____ customers/employees only" signs are closed. Whilst in some cases it can be illegal (it's usually pretty obvious when that is the case) most business do not mind you parking in their customer parking outside of business hours.


Besides these tips, most councils are free at certain times such as first hour or after dark. So next time you head out you can reject the Wilson parking and find your own free little spot just down the road. Spend the savings congratulating yourself.
