Paris - A Rock Odyssey is a tribute to late Australian rock legend
Jon English and is coming to the
Melbourne Recital Centre in July. Starring
John Waters as
Ulysses and with other huge names such as
Ben Mingay and
Brian Mannix in the cast, this is a show not to be missed.
Paris - A Rock Odyssey began its life as a soundtrack. Music Theatre Melbourne (MTM) was working with English on a theatrical production when he died last year.
Paris is a love story drawn from Greek mythology. It was the love affair which caused the great war between Greece and Troy. From this conflict a giant wooden horse was built and allowed the invading Greeks to enter the besieged city of Troy and overcome them - a conflict forever known as the
Trojan War and any subterfuge by misrepresentation to be called a trojan horse.
Paris - A Rock Odyssey brings the love story into a new form. It also serves as an homage to our great Australian rock legend, English himself. Known for such classic tracks as 'Hollywood 7', 'Six Ribbons', 'Words Are Not Enough', 'Hot Town', and 'Some People' this would have been enough to establish him forever in our cultural history. English, however, was also a star of the stage with a performance biography including
The Pirates of Penzance and
Jesus Christ Superstar as well as the TV miniseries
Against The Wind.
Mark Featherby, Director of MTM said, "
He [English] wanted John Waters in our show and we are so grateful John is playing Ulysses as he was on the original cast album and has such an integral association with John and Paris." Music Theatre Melbourne recently announced the whole cast which, apart from those already mentioned above includes
Tim Freedman (from
The Whitlams ) and
Jonathon Sora-English (Jon English's son).
English developed the musical Paris over 3 years with
David Mackay who was the producer of English's album
Some People. The track 'Oh Paris' was the first step in creating the stage life for this version of the Greek myth.
This MTM concert production is a celebration of English's memory and legacy. It brings together some of the greatest talents in the country in a story as old as time and yet as real and relevant now as it ever was.
