Book Bazaar in Shenton Park is quite possibly the largest secondhand bookshop in Perth, and definitely one of the best. Run by the registered charity ParaQuad Industries, not only are the books excellent quality but they're always well priced with children's books starting at $1 and novels from $2.

If Shenton Park is a bit inconvenient, they also operate Op Shops and Book Bazaars in Willetton and Stirling with a great range of curated titles.Every month the massive Shenton Park Bazaar holds half-price sales, and while there are a few exceptions (such as rare books and CDs), this means you can quite literally walk out with an armload of books for a few dollars. Check the Facebook page @bookbazaarperth for the next Massive Sale Date.

I often visit Book Bazaar for its incredible range of local history books, many of which are increasingly rare or out of print. You will pay extra for these special books, but thanks to a contract with the State Library bringing in hundreds of new titles every week, you will find an impressive range of non-fiction and specialist books in addition to the enormous range of novels and kids' books you'd expect to find in any secondhand bookshop.

You will also find talking books (CDs) and music CDs, comics and collectables. There are coffee table books and books about crafts and hobbies from basket weaving to decoupage.

There are cookbooks and travel stories, true crime and an entire section on tattooing. There is philosophy and religion, sport, military and war and large print.

You will find tables dedicated solely to Australian authors and an entire section just of books published by Penguin with their distinctive orange covers. If you're wanting old-school children's stories look no further than the Little Golden Books or original Enid Blyton, plus a beautiful area of vintage publications.

As the sign says, the weather is always fine in a bookshop, and with plenty of free parking in front of the building (and even more out the back) it's easy to while away the time in such a welcoming space. There are super cheap paperbacks outside the front door (10 for $1) and shopping baskets just inside. If you have a booklover in the family but know you couldn't possibly choose for them, you can even get gift vouchers.Opening hours are usually Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4pm and they are typically closed on weekends. However, during the Massive Book Sales, they have extended hours 9am to 5pm Friday and Saturday 10am to 2pm.
