Steelbands converge for 3-day Caribbean-style party
Brisbane's biggest steel band festival will be held over three days from 20-22 September at the Rocklea Showgrounds. The event is being organised by PANZ (Pan Australia and New Zealand). It is a family-friendly carnival with Caribbean-influenced music, competitions, parade, workshops, children's activities, and Caribbean food and bar.
Special guest this year is Nicky Bomba, musician and songwriter who leads the Melbourne Ska Orchestra. He and professional steelpannist Tracy Thornton of the US will be guests at the public workshops during the festival.
Admission is $5, or $10 for a 3-day pass. FREE for kids under 17. Tickets are available through Eventbrite. Gate opens at 9am. Festival ends at 1pm Sunday.
The association was formed to promote and foster steel bands, develop steel bands in schools, seek funding and support, hold workshops, and provide a point of contact for steel bands and steel pan players in Australia and New Zealand.
