When I think of Brisbane, the first thing that comes to mind is 'the friendly, easy going little city by the river'. I think of its hot, humid summer days and warm evening sunsets. I think of those so-called 'cold' winters and of those tropical storms, which have everyone carrying an umbrella, even when the sun is shining. I picture its suburbs, with many a street lined with typical Queenslander homes, spanning out from the river into the hills and plains. When I really think about it, it's a pretty special city. And one lady who knows how to relay the beauty of our little Brisbane is contemporary Visual Artist Pamela Gough .



I was lucky enough to attend the opening night of Pam's latest exhibition 'Take Me There' at the Graydon Gallery located in the heart of New Farm at 29 Merthyr Road. It is only a short walk from the charming little shops and restaurants of New Farm Village. Big old trees, with roots that push up the footpath, line the narrow road to the gallery, which is a beautifully renovated old Queenslander. Inside you will find a spacious, well-laid out and modern interior with timber floors and clean white walls, with the art serving as a visual treat.



The gallery couldn't be a better pick for the exhibition, particularly in terms of location, as most of Pam's work encapsulates a mystical snapshot of Brisbane. 'Take Me There' will quite literally take you to unexpected places 'on the map and imagined, of the heart and the mind and back home again'. It is all about using 'line, texture, colour and historical illustration' to relay a 'strong sense of spirit', particularly in relation to place. And the exhibit doesn't just feature Brisbane; there are a few pieces featuring Melbourne and other locations from Pam's travels. Your also in luck because although Pam does sell originals, she also sells prints, greeting cards etc (the whole kit and caboodle).



Walking around the gallery I had to do at least three laps to absorb the depth of each painting. Her paintings are filled with so much texture and colour that every time I looked at her each piece I saw something different. Her work features iconic Australian images, such as corrugated roofs, gumtrees, and beaches, mixed in with a bit of magic and creativity created by artistic representations of maps, city plans and ancient symbols. It is this little bit of magic that allows Pam's art to 'scratch at the surface of life' so that the viewer can 'search for authenticity and soul' within the narrative upon the canvas.

Her work ignited that feeling I get whenever I come home from a big trip overseas, that sense of belonging, that feeling of Brisbane, of Australia, being home. And that is definitely an authentic feeling that holds a place within my heart and soul. You too could find a bit of authenticity and soul, if you let yourself be taken there. But you'll have to get in quick, as the exhibition closes on Sunday 21st July, with the gallery being open daily from 10am – 6pm (or by appointment).
