The tenth Palmer Sculpture Biennial marks a massive milestone as it becomes one of the longest professionally curated sculpture exhibitions in Australia. The big blue sky envelops the four hundred acre windswept hills of Greg John's property near Palmer to provide an ideal backdrop for works by contemporary sculptors from all around Australia and all over the world.
Greg acquired the property in 2001 and set about restoring the land to its natural balance with the intention of displaying his own work. Since 2004, the bi-annual event has grown to include a series of over twenty artworks standing quietly among the rocky outcrops and undulating grass-covered hills.
Find your way to the entrance on Davenport Road just out of Palmer and as you step out of your car you'll be instantly mesmerised by the scale of the landscape around you. I have to admit that I was a little overawed at the sight of sculptures sitting at a spot that seemed so high and far away up on the ridge top, but the walk (or drive) is easily achievable. Each work is surrounded by space, like the white space on a clean poster design, this space allows each work plenty of room to present itself in isolation and lends each work the full range of angles and backdrops against which to view them.
I'm not sure of the driving arrangements on site but on our visit, we had a chat with the co-ordinator and were given a map and invited to drive along the paths slowly and carefully. If you are planning to walk the trail among the sculptures, wear sturdy boots and a hat and pack sunscreen and water. Walking is definitely worthwhile to truly experience the connection between the regenerated land and the art.
Definitely do not forget a camera and make sure to bring $10 so you can purchase the guidebook, it's worth it and an event like this definitely deserves the support of the whole community. There are no facilities on site but there are toilets and a general store in nearby Palmer.
The site is open to the public on Wednesdays from 2pm to 5.30pm and at weekends 11am to 5.30pm until April 17th, 2022.
