The main street of Mannum has a lot to offer in the way of cafés and restaurants for both tourists and locals alike, and while most are easy to spot, there is one little gem that is hidden away in a rather unlikely spot.
David Shearer's Cottage B&B and Cafe
The Palm Court Café is situated opposite the Pretoria Hotel in a building that was once the residence of David Shearer, the creator of Australia's first steam car. At one time it served as a bank but is now the home of a quaint bed & breakfast and the unique Palm Court Café.
The connection to their Queensland experience - coupled with their European heritage - is reflected both in the name Palm Court and in the opulent tropical décor of the café, which the owners have based on the art deco period of the 1890's to 1940's. The fixtures are all custom-made from Robert's original designs. There is a choice of indoor or alfresco dining and while you are waiting for your meal, you can browse the shelves of preserves, gifts, books, home décor, plants and collectibles.
Enjoy a selection of teas, coffees, snacks and delicious meals
The café is open from Friday through Monday 10.30am until 8pm serving all-day lunch, and evening meals from 5pm to eat in or take away. Along with a wide selection of teas and coffees, you can enjoy dishes like Moroccan Lemon Olive Chicken, Portuguese Deep Dish Pie and German Farmhouse Meatballs, just to name a few. The café is fully licensed, so you can also choose from a menu of South Australian wines and Craft beers.

Robert and Karen provide impeccable service and enjoy getting to know the locals and tourists. After recovering from a long period battling cancer, Robert has pledged his support to organisations involved in research and treatment and any tips received at the café go straight to this worthwhile cause - even more of a reason to visit and get to know this wonderful couple.
Well Colleen,Mannun is my favourite town on this mighty river in S.A.As a boy stayed on a houseboat and drank the water direct from the river.I hope to return in the near future,so I may just call in to this cafe.
