Summer is well and truly here and to make the most of the gorgeous sunshine and balmy evenings, what local business Pallet Wines has on offer might be just what you and your friends need at your next social gathering!

Making goon fancy with its impeccable box design by two very talented local artists, Pallet Wines officially launched their business just under 5 months ago, but it has quickly gained momentum for its eye-catching design and its delectable flavour. In anticipation of launching their business this year, I was fortunate enough to speak to co-owner Sophie Williams about this new venture - have a read of our exchange below:

Tema: Congratulations on the new venture, Sophie!! What made you start your own business?
Sophie: Thank you Fatema for your questions. I've had this idea for a long time. Last year, I loved planning my wedding and I felt a hole in my life not having a hobby to use my spare time. So, I decided to take the plunge. My husband, friends and family have all been super supportive of the idea.

Tema: Why fancy goon in particular? I mean, it sounds amazing, but curious to know what made you focus on this product especially?
Sophie: So I first came up with the idea when I lived in a share house in my late 20's. My friends were embarrassed of their goon box and hid it whenever we had company. I thought if it was good wine, hopefully, they would be proud of showing off their love for cask wine! After the issues with exporting wine to China, I looked around South Australia and turns out, there are lots of lovely wines out there, whose winemakers are happy to sell under another label.

Tema: What are some SA wines that you are showcasing through Pallet Wines?
Sophie: The wines we have sourced for our first drop is a Shiraz from McLaren Vale and a Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide Hills. The second part of the fancy goon is that if you go into a bottle shop, all of the cask wine boxes are pretty boring (at least in my opinion). So, I wanted something unique and interesting, which is why I commissioned two amazing artists to do one box each. One is by Elle Dawson-Scott and the other is by Elspeth Domin , I love what they have both created.

Tema: How does the concept of Pallet Wines work?
Sophie: For now, we're only doing e-commerce but we have hopes to expand the business and get our name out there by participating in local markets. At the moment, customers can buy cask wine online and your tasty 3 litres of wine will be sent to your doorstep.

Tema: Do customers get to decide what wines they get in the box or is it prepackaged?
Sophie: It's pre-determined at this stage, so the white is with Elle's design and the red with Elspeth's.

Tema: What would you like your customers to experience when purchasing from Pallet Wines?
Sophie: We want our customers to have not only a delicious, good quality wine but we want them to proudly show their box off because they're so gorgeous. We've made our logo and information stickers so they're super easy to remove so you can reuse your box again. Each wine we sell will only be limited edition, so if you like one in particular, I'd say stock up. If you have one that's not your favourite, stay tuned for the next release as they'll be completely different wine.

Tema: Why should people get behind Pallet Wines and support it fiercely?
Sophie: We are, in true South Australian style, heaps good with our selection of wines! Everything (besides the sacks sadly, because no one in South Australia from what we've found makes 3L sacks) is locally-sourced. We want to show off how amazing our wine and artists are. We have so much talent in this state!

Tema: Is there anything else that you'd like us to know about you and Pallet Wines?
Sophie: There are lots of advantages around enjoying a cask wine, but that's not our major selling point. However, it is an added bonus! Also, another advantage of cask wine is it should keep a little bit longer than an opened bottle of wine would.

Pallet Wines is now open for business and is accepting orders for their McLaren Vale Shiraz and Organic Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc .
