It's true. If you want to enjoy breakfast in Brisbane, get there early. This particularly applies to Paddington's Paleo Café.
We arrived around eight and easily secured a table for our group of five, but soon after, there was a long queue. People continued to come and go, right up until we left just after eleven.
I hadn't seen the menu and my knowledge of Paleo eating was quite limited, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Menus and water came to our table really quickly and we were advised of two daily specials. These were a BLAT (BLT avocado), and a sweet potato and spinach omelette.
There was a good variety on the breakfast men; a couple of egg dishes, stuffed mushrooms, banana pancakes and muesli among them. The drinks menu had everything covered, including a variety of non dairy "milks" available in your coffee or smoothie.
The philosophy of paleo eating is no grains, processed foods, sugar or dairy. A couple of the dishes on the menu included paleo toast. When we asked about them we found out the bread was made using flaxseed and coconut flours and lots of eggs. The bread is made on site so they know exactly what goes into it. There was also some yoghurt in the dishes, so I assume it is made with non-dairy ingredients.
Service was good, especially considering how busy the place was. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable and not too snooty as they can be at some places.
After much deliberation, we placed our orders. Three of us choose the salsa verde eggs, one the omelette special and the other ordered the stuffed mushrooms. Our eggs came as two beautifully poached eggs on paleo toast with roasted tomato, bacon, rocket and a generous dob of delicious salsa verde on top. Cracked pepper was served by our waitress when the dishes arrived. The omelette was also served with salad and was a good sized and tasty dish. The stuffed mushrooms were a little disappointing as there was only one mushroom on the plate, and not enough bacon in the stuffing. For $14 we thought it was not great value.
Everyone enjoyed their drinks; a variety of coffees and a green tea. The atmosphere and décor was fantastic. The fact that you order at the counter makes it good for groups as you can just pay your own way. The downside is at times the line up to order was quite long. Paleo is a great place for breakfast and I would like to try their lunch menu some time soon.
