Stopping for a bite to eat in Prahran, Palate immediately caught my attention with its bright and airy space, the warm and inviting decor and smiling helpful staff. At the ever trendy precinct of Prahran (132 Greville Street, Prahran) where eateries are aplenty, one has to have an 'edge' to stand out. Palate is over 3 years old and is a part of the JBS Hospitality Group who seem to specialise in accumulating venues with great ambience.
Breakfast is served all day and in our experience service is quite quick. Their menu is Paleo inspired and the first of its kind in Melbourne. Here you can have gluten, dairy and sugar free meals. For your all day breakfast you can have seasonal fruits, house made Bircher muesli, gluten free muesli, oat porridge, vanilla bean and honey yoghurt pot, French toast Canadian Style (confused? It has bacon, maple and banana), fresh strawberry pancakes and all kinds of egg related meals like eggs florentine, benedict, with quinoa, scrambled and so on to name a few. You can even have a bread free brekkie burger.
Lunch time brings on the beer battered fries, linguine, house made gnocchi pillows, wagyu beef burger, bbq peri peri chicken, grilled calamari, grilled salmon fillet to name a few choices. You can also create your own lunch or breakfast. You can select 5 items (inclusive of 1 meat) for $19 or select 7 items (inclusive of 1 meat) for $23. There is a list of around 16 items to choose from plus a list for the meats like Tasmanian smoked salmon, smokey bacon rashers, herbed chicken breast, grilled lamb fillet, chilli garlic prawns or porterhouse fillet steak.
The rest of the meals range from around $11 to $20 average. Beverages include coffee, fresh juices, smoothies, milkshakes and soft drinks. They also stock Tea Drop teas which are whole leaf tea with fresh cut herbs, real fruit pieces, flowers and exotic spices combined in a pyramid shaped pouch made from 100% biodegradable unbleached material with some exotic names like Cleopatra's Champagne and Malabar Chai to name a couple. With the fresh juices they have 'Detox', 'Flu Fighter' and the likes or you can create your own. You can check out what's on offer for dessert at the counter and there are raw vegan desserts as well like the ones we chose.
For our meal we chose the create your own menu and I had grilled asparagus with pine nuts, cauliflower rice with garlic and onion, roasted pumpkin with paprika, beetroot with shallots and sunflower seeds and citrus infused sweet potato and macadamia mash. It was absolutely delicious and had surprisingly good texture with all those seeds thrown in and again, surprisingly filling. The second dish you see is also a create your own with additions different to mine like the chilli garlic prawns, avocado smashed with red onion, tomato and lime and an extra serve of beef, the porterhouse fillet steak for extra dollars. I'd definitely come here again. Naturally they do have a Facebook page as well so check it out.
