About Day of the Dead
The Day of the Dead is a tradition which acknowledges the circle of life and celebrates and remembers loved ones who have passed away.
The event has its roots in Mesoamerican culture and is colourful and life-affirming. It is believed to have originated several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life's long continuum.
Day of the Dead features colourful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons). They come to represent that humans are all skeletons." Underneath all our manmade trappings, we are all the same."
