So, you want to expand your creative and artistic skills into painting, do you? Personally, I think it's a brilliant idea because painting can be very therapeutic. The entire process of producing a painting can be very relaxing because you focus your attention on something and can work on a project from start to finish. From when you're first drawing your design on your canvas, to when you're mixing the colours and using your brush you're distracted and focusing on something entirely different from your day to day life. The best thing is that you end up with something concrete – a result. You can then gift this result or hang it in your home for a souvenir. Once you learn the basics of painting, you can produce artworks for all of your friends and family to enjoy.

The Sydney Community College is at the top of my list for basic painting courses. For $225, you get 7 sessions which add up to 17.5 hours in total. The College is located in Rozelle and you'll need to purchase about $50 of extra materials to bring to class with you.

Class options include exploring gouache, acrylics, oil paints, charcoal and collage. You'll be working on your own project or one guided by the teacher. The College recommends that you do their Drawing Essentials course prior to enrolling into the painting course but it's not compulsory. This course will teach you about colour, line, shape, pattern, the way that artworks relate to technique and style and the mixing of colours and tonal ranges.

It is hoped that by the end of the course, you'll start to develop your own style and explore different techniques. You'll also have an understanding of composition, mixed mediums and tone. Your creative side will flourish with the knowledge you'll accrue about colour including the use of semi-transparent pigments. If you buy your materials from Tilly's Art Supplies in Rozelle and present a copy of your enrolment confirmation, you're eligible for a 10% discount for materials.

If you're more after a short intensive course, you might consider the National Art School 's (NAS) short courses. Though a little pricier than the basics at Sydney Community College, the Painting with Confidence course runs during summer and costs $655. There will be demonstrations and techniques with a variety of paints and tools. This course features individual tutorials and you'll learn to be braver with your painting skills.

Those of you who are a bit more experienced with painting might want to try the NAS Painting Master Class with Roger Crawford. You do need to have painting and drawing experience for this course and you get Mr Crawford's extensive experience. You are encouraged to bring what you're currently working on including photos and sketchbooks. Various approaches to painting are discussed and taught in individual and group tutorials. This course costs $655, which is of course once again pricier than the basics at Sydney Community College, but it could be worth it for someone advanced enough in painting.

There are so many painting classes available in community colleges in addition to the aforementioned, including specialist oil painting classes. The City East Community College offers eight two hour oil painting sessions for $180. If you're far from the east, you can get the same deal but for $164 at the Nepean Community College . The Parramatta College offers a drawing and painting course for $130, also for eight sessions. These cost effective options are great for trying painting and help support your local community. A list of oil painting classes offered by community colleges can be found here . For less specific community college painting classes including water colours and acrylic painting in various locations, a wonderful resource is this website . You can find great deals on painting classes in your local area.

Whether you're just starting out with this exciting hobby or are already established and are looking to brush up your skills, there are options for you. Painting is a beautiful way to express and distract yourself from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Give it a try some time if you're looking for a new hobby because after all, what have you got to lose apart from stress?
