Painters. There they go, flouncing about in their smocks and neckties, looking at things sideways and making flamboyant gestures. Drinking coffe and red wine and smoking too many hand-rolled cigarettes. Throwing extravagant parties and talking like they're dreaming. And then, of course, they actually paint pictures. If you want to be a painter (or if you just want to dabble in colour), why not try out one of these painting classes to get you started? Who knows, maybe one day you too will be flouncing about in a smock.

Painting at the CAE
The Centre for Adult Education (CAE) has many painting courses on offer. There are classes for absolute beginners, as well as classes on abstract painting, portrait painting, en plein air (landscape/outdoor) painting, and several others. The teachers at the CAE are usually professionals in the field they are teaching, and class environments are relaxed and friendly. There's no pressure to produce a masterpiece. If you really get involved with painting, you can also study a Diploma of Visual Arts through the Centre. The CAE has a few campuses, all situated around Flinders Lane and Degraves Street, in Melbourne. Check the CAE website for details.

Rings Road Art Studio
The Rings Road Art Studio is run by professional artist Effie Mandalos. Classes at the Studio focus on developing the students' technical ability, so if you want to brush up (pardon the pun) on your technical painting skills, this could be the class for you. A variety of painting classes are offered, including watercolour, painting for beginners, and portraiture. Rings Road Art Studio is located in Moorabbin, at 1 Rings Road.

Painting From Within
If you're interested in a more holistic and less technique-driven painting class, why not try Painting From Within. This class is about the practice of painting as a meditative and psychologically enriching task. It's more art therapy than art school, but you don't have to be sick or disturbed to benefit from it. The class is just about unleashing your inner creativity, and getting rid of your fear of self-expression through art. Classes include meditation. Painting From Within is usually held on weekends at the Sandringham Baseball Club, Tulip Street, Sandringham. There are also weekend escapes to more exotic locales, such as the Mornington Peninsula and Mansfield.

Ellen Michel School of Painting
If you want an extensive beginners painting course which covers all the basics of colour theory and technique, you might want to try the Ellen Michel School of Painting. You learn to paint from life, still life, portraiture, and landscape painting Day and evening classes are available, and beginners' oil painting kits are available also. The Ellen Michel School of Painting is situated at 206 Cape Street, Heidelberg.
