Paint in Peace: Adults Only Pottery Painting Nights

The last time I went to the Pottery Playroom in Joondalup, I found myself a little overwhelmed by kids, my own included.

Taking a break from their painting, they were all hanging upside down and having a great time on the little indoor play area.But I didn't want a break from the painting. I wanted a break from the kids.



So when I discovered the monthly 'Paint in Peace' evenings offered by the Pottery Playroom, I gathered together some mums and arranged a painting, pizza and pinot night. No kids, just lots of fun and some great company.

Although there is a little café at the Pottery Place where you can buy coffee and slice or cookies, for the Paint in Peace evenings you can bring a pizza and some wine, and combine your creative urges with your need to eat.



I ordered some pizzas to be delivered at 7.30pm (Crust Joondalup do great pizzas) and once we had opened a bottle of wine of two (they will provide glasses), we were able to select our pottery pieces and get started.

You must book ahead of time, but they can accommodate almost any size group. We were a group of six which worked well. We could all hear each other talk, and it was a pleasant and creative way to spend an evening with friends – something different from an ordinary dinner out.

The pottery pieces vary from small figurines such as dragons, fairies and mermaids, to boxes with lids, money boxes and even a tissue box cover. Then there is a range of kitchen items including plates and bowls, spoon rests, cookie jars and a great range of funny (and serious) mugs, like the cookie mug which has space underneath for a cookie to have with your cuppa.

Prices vary depending on the size of the piece you choose but they start around $15 and head up to $40 , and the price is all inclusive meaning it covers the cost of the paints as well as firing. It will take around a week for the piece to be glazed and fired, and you receive a text message saying when it ready to be collected.

Around the room there are some finished pieces and decorated tiles, but if you are not naturally gifted in the creative zone, then I would recommend googling some inspiration before you arrive. Dot paintings were popular in my group, as were painting fairies and dragons to go into the garden at home.



I made a watermelon bowl and can't wait to see what it looks like when it is glazed (the colours will become much darker and shinier).

Paint in Peace is generally held once a month, on a Thursday at the beginning of the month, but it is best to call or check out the Pottery Playroom Facebook page to find out when the next night is. Evenings run between 7 and 10pm, and I would recommend around two hours to finish your masterpiece (and have breaks for pizza).

Paint in Peace nights would work equally well for couples who share a common creative interest to a (rather sedate) hen's night or kitchen tea where everyone can decorate a bowl or plate for the bride's new dinner set.
