The hugely successful Comic-Con is one of the biggest pop culture conventions in the world, attracting everyone from preschooler superhero fans, teen Cosplayers through to die hard Sci-fi followers.

Oz Comic-Con, only introduced to Australian fans in 2012, with conventions held in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney Adelaide and of course Melbourne, attract a crowd of literally thousands each year.

As first time Oz Comic-Con attendees last year, we arrived at 9am as doors to the exhibition opened, expecting to be one of the first, only to find an existing queue of hundreds; eager fans waiting patiently in line.

Some might consider a 1.5hr queue time a little excessive for ticket holders, but in all honestly, getting to know your fellow fans, fully dressed in character, is entertainment in itself.

Expect to join the queue with a Stormtrooper, a Trekkie or a Ghostbuster, The Joker, a Pokemon character, Thor, Catwoman, or a character from a cult TV show.

For many, this is a chance to express their alter ego through fictional character, an excuse for a weekend dress-up, not just reserved for kids. A lot of effort, creativity and time goes into desired outfits for the event, with many fans making their own costumes from scratch.

Once inside the hall, there are booths selling all sorts of comic related paraphernalia, from posters to Lego, video games to signed pictures, Sci-fi art, books to miniature characters and rare comics, leaving a hole in the pocket, but smile on the face of many.

For die hard fans, celebrity autograph signings and photograph opportunities are the reasons to go (photograph and autograph tokens at extra cost). Get in quick though, as last year, an opportunity for a photograph with William Shatner sold out within the first few hours. For this year's guest line up check Oz Comic-Con's Facebook page or website for updates.

If you think Comic-Con is a nerd fest for grown-ups, think again. Your children will love the opportunity to see some of their favourite superhero characters in dress-up, and Sci-fi movies come to life in front of their eyes at Oz Comic-Con.
