The 18th Annual Over The Fence Comedy Short Film Festival

Residents of Western Australia, get ready to "get your giggle on", as the 18th annual Over The Fence Short Comedy Film Festival is coming your way!

With short films showcased from all around the world, there is bound to be a little something for everyone.

This year's theme is "It's A Big Bad World Out There" and these 14 very different comedy filmmakers, sure do share that sentiment, but in very different ways.

The team at Over The Fence has spent the past few months tediously watching hundreds of entries, from all over the world and they have selected what they believe to be the "cream of the crop" of comedy in this "big bad world" genre.

Their goal is to "celebrate new and independent film-makers, offer refreshing ideas of "what comedy is" and to give the audience a whole new experience of the way in which funny stories can be told through a wide variety of film-making styles and genres.

This year's line-up will not disappoint:

Open House (US), which has come to fame, through its release and promotion through famous comedy site: Funny or Die, is directed by Marisha Murkujee and stars Herbert Russell, who rose to fame through his roles in 1998's Stepmom, Robot Chicken and 2014's The Hangover Games, Deb Hiett, who also wrote the script and you may recognise her from Desperate Housewives, Prison Break and The Office and Carrie Barrett, who has just started working on the up and coming Uncle Buck television series.

The stars of Open House

Open House is a hilariously dark little film, which delves into everything its characters are thinking, whilst being shown through a house for sale, and it really shows that nothing is ever as it seems on the surface.

Flowers (UK), which most recently won Best Comedy of 2015 at the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival, is written and directed by Sabina Sattar and stars up and coming actors Will Green and Marian Elizabeth.

Flowers is a wonderful story about a boy, who falls in love with a girl, but when there is a major miscommunication between the two of them, the boy goes above and beyond, in one big romantic gesture to win her heart; this is a major highlight of the festival!

Gumtree (Australia), which is directed by Chris Wilde, who co-wrote the script with Emma Leonard, who also stars in the film with Jimmy Seargeant, who are best known for their roles in Home and Away.

Gumtree is a great film, filled with dark Aussie humor, which gets darker and darker as the film goes on! This is one for those who like to let out a good "Muahahaha!" by the time the credits roll.

Love and Commando
(France), written and directed by Laurent Ardoint and Stéphane Duprat who stars alongside
Diane Montcharmont, who I am sure will go far!

Love and Commando is another absolute highlight in this festival! A musical, love story, which is set entirely in 1944, during WW2, it follows the lives of Steve and the love of his life, Natalie, as they battle against the odds, through bullets, blood, sweat, tears and comically fake, severed limbs, in order to try to get the "happily ever after" they deserve.

Thundercluck: Chicken of Thor (US), is directed, produced, written and animated by Paul Tillery and stars the magnificent voice of Dandy Barrett.

Thundercluck: Chicken of Thor, will appeal to both the young and the young at heart and if you are a fan of the Thor movies and/or comics, then you are going to love this film! It tells the story of "Thundercluck", a Viking chicken, born with the power of thunder and he's half mortal, half god and 100% all natural chicken! And I am very happy to report that there is a spin off television series on its way, so keep an eye out for more of everyone's new, favourite feathered hero.

Till Jail Do Us Part (Peurto Rico) is a stunningly beautiful film written by Joserro Emmanuelli, how co-directed it with Mariana Emmanuelli and stars Cristian Miranda, Manuel Hernández, Gretza Merced Cruz and Patrick Urbain, who all put on a stunning performance!

Till Jail Do Us Part is a cinematic feast for the eyes, which not only looks impressive, but also has a bit of everything, including drama, suspense, action, romance and lots of laughs; this is a brilliant film and needs to be seen.

My Kingdom (US) written and directed, by Debra Solomo, who rose to fame, with her awesome animation skills on the Lizzie McGuire movie and television series, and starring the voice of Jane Curtin.

My Kingdom is pure awesome! It is highly relatable, funny and includes a catchy song, which will have you bopping along by the end of it. It has also most recently won Best Animated Short at the Woodstock Film Festival.

Noddy (Australia), directed by Ben Plazzer and starring Chris Fortuna, Thomas Gilchrist and Justin Hosking.

Noddy is about a man named Mark, whose job is to stand behind the Prime Minister of Australia and nod at everything they say, no matter what they say. His goal is to become the best at his job and win a "Noddy Award", but it all goes wrong with a hilarious outcome. I enjoyed this film a lot, but it may touch a nerve with those who like to argue about politics.

Once Upon A Time In Nazi Germany (UK) is a surprising gem of very dark humour, written and directed by Huw Samuel, who also stars in the film, alongside Daz Black, Callum Scott Walker and Lewis Paul Martin.

The stars of Once Upon A Time In Nazi Germany

Once Upon A Time In Nazi Germany has a title that says it all, it's got a lot of humour directed at a younger adult audience, with brilliant British whit and a very cool soundtrack. It truly pokes fun at the worst sides of WW2, again one I thoroughly enjoyed, but certainty won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Pussy Chronicles (Germany) (Don't go googling this one at work). Directed by Justyna Grzybowska and starring Emma Drogunova & Nastaja Revvo.

Pussy Chronicles is a funny little story about two young women, who wonder what it might be like to have a penis. They each have very different ideas, which will leave you giggling in your seat. This is a fun and light film, which is anything but pornography.

In The Bag (Canada), directed by Cole Northey and starring Conor Gomez,
Vanessa Gibeau,
Thomas Noonan and
Michael Northey.

In The Bag Poster

In The Bag is a mix of Canadian and Australian dark humor, which turns an average night out of drinking with the boys into a hilarious serious of disasters. The acting was very believable and you really get a sense of both loving and hating the characters at the same time, apart from the man who runs the store at the start, he is a legend!

Fixed (Australia), directed by Burleigh Smith and Codey Wilson and starring Amara Harnisch, Jamie Smith, Paul Treasure and Daisy the adorable dog!

Fixed Poster

Fixed is a WA film, made in Armadale, which may help change its "rough and tumble" reputation into quite the opposite. This is a wonderful story about a little girl, who finds out the wrong way, through her brother, about the birds and the bees and why her little dog Tilly is going to need "fixing". This is my favourite film by far in this year's lineup, with its cleverly hidden, but right in your face clue as to how it will all end, along with the perfect timing and performances by all of the cast are just brilliant.

All You Do Is Shag (Spain), directed by Manu Bueno and starring Ana Morgade and
Jorge Marrón.

All You Do Is Shag Poster

All You Do Is Shag is a very funny film about a couple who have the worst of arguments about how perfect their relationship is. This film has subtitles, but you get so caught up in the moment that you forget you are even reading them.

The Final Scene (UK), is a perfect ending to this wonderful lineup of comedy gold and is directed by Mark Pressdee, who stars alongside Carissa Wagner.

The Final Scene is definitely a film made for filmmakers, with industry related inside jokes and a very cool demonstration of what you can do with a green screen. This film also personally mentions both The Over The Fence Comedy Film Festival and Greg Coffey, the festival director in it... Which leads me into thinking that was a big sway as to why this film was selected. Nevertheless this is still a funny little film, with a hilarious ending and definitely stay till the end of the credits for an extra laugh.

The Over The Fence Comedy Film Festival will be touring WA during May.
