Outside In - Film Review (American Essentials Film Festival 2018)
Outside In is just one of the many independent films screening as part of the American Essentials Film Festival from May 10-20 at the Kino and Astor Cinemas in Melbourne.
An Australian premiere,
Outside In is a new drama by Lynn Shelton, starring Jay Duplass, who plays Chris, a 38-year-old ex-con. Carol (Edie Falco), who happens to be his ex-high school teacher, is the reason he is finally released from prison after 20 years. He soon realises that technology has progressed and smartphones, smart TVs and wifi are all the rage.
Set in a small town in Washington state, Granite Hills, Chris is trying to fit into the community, preferring to live out of his brother's garage and rides a rusty old bike around.
Relationships between Chris and his younger brother are becoming distant as bitter truths come out.
Hilde, Carol's young daughter, is also struggling with her family's breakdown and being a teenager, expresses her emotions through her art installations.
The film is fresh and raw and the cast portray their roles brilliantly. There is romance and drama as intense relationships and emotions go out of control.
A collection of the freshest US films coming out of the Festival circuit,
Outside In was nominated for awards at the Goteborg Film Festival and was part of the official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival of 2017.
Check out the Kino and Astor to find out session times.
