Situated in the affluent suburb of South Yarra amongst an apartment complex, Outpost Café is a reasonably small café that has a unique alternative and hipster vibe that resonates around you upon entrance. At least that's how I felt when I went inside. The alternative feel seems to be the current style in many top Melbourne cafes and Outpost Café is of course no exception to it, with music magazines, as well as the hipster dress code all apparent in Outpost.

But of course, this is what contributes towards a good-looking, stylish café, in which Outpost is a clear example of such. As well, it provides a sense of freshness to the otherwise quiet and sterile business surroundings of the apartments. Listed under The Age Good Café Guide 2011, Outpost has 1 cup for very good coffee and food, which is sure enough reason for anyone to pay Outpost a visit. During my time there, I ordered the cold drip coffee ($4), a drink that is served cold in a cup that is slightly larger than your usual espresso cup. Since it was my first time drinking a cold drip coffee, I found that despite it being a cold drink, the cold drip coffee still retains some of that unique sweet flavour that you often get from a classic espresso. A must try for any coffee buff out there wanting to move on past the usual latte or cappuccino.

In addition, Outpost obtains its single estate coffees from St Ali in South Melbourne. Considering the status of St Ali as a pedigreed coffee roaster, this is another reason to pay Outpost a visit and expect quality coffee. Other than the coffee, I found the service there to be quite friendly and informal and complimented the overall hipster vibe of the cafe.

The daily menu in Outpost changes on a daily basis, which allows the customer to try a diverse range of dishes and keeps things interesting in the food category. Have a glance at the menu on Outpost's website for its range of favourite dishes on its breakfast and lunch menus.

It also should be said that Outpost Café is also conveniently located near South Yarra station. Simply catching the Cranbourne train in Flinders St makes going to Outpost a hassle free experience.

New owners/management have taken over now. Completely different. They have a well known chef, but still have to find their new feet with coffee. Give it a few months now.
