Canungra, also known as "The Valley of the Owls" is a quaint little town in the Gold Coast Hinterland. On our way to the picturesque O'Reilly's Rainforest, we made a spontaneous lunch stop at Canungra. We were glad we did as we found a little gem in the heart of the Hinterland.

We chose the Outpost Café on a whim because we could smell the aroma from the café whilst walking down the street.

The aroma beckons

Guided by the smell and our hunger pangs, I was happy to see that the pies were homemade. The word "homemade" usually guarantees freshness of ingredients and the Outpost Cafe did not disappoint.

The café is cosy and old-fashioned, with a real country feel.
I ordered the chicken and mushroom pie.

At $5.60 AUD, I initially thought the pie was a bit pricey in comparison to other pies but when it was served, I could see why. The pie was a generous size filled to the brim with ingredients. I later found out that it weighed 330g.

The chicken and mushroom pie was delicious, the pie crust crispy and the ingredients fresh. Usually, pies do not fill me up and I normally need to order something else to satisfy my hunger but this pie was large enough that I felt full and satisfied afterwards.

Delicious

The café had a nice veranda to sit at on sunny days and a few pictures of Elvis decorated the walls.

Comfy atmosphere

There is also a gift shop available. Although famous for their pies, the café also served all day breakfasts, healthy salads, burgers and smoothies. Their other specialty is Dutch Poffertjes which looked scrumptious with fresh cream.

Other than the café, Canungra also have other treasures to offer including The Canungra Village Markets held on the last Saturday of each month from 8am - 1pm at the Canungra State School and the Canungra Valley Vineyards and Wineries.

If you are planning to explore what Canungra has to offer, don't forget to visit the Outpost Café.
A helpful tip – visit their website by clicking here to print out a voucher for free tea or coffee with any Dutch Poffertjes purchase.

But the best coffee in Canungra is available at the Bean Inn right next door.
