Robert Kirkman is one of the biggest names in graphic novels at the moment. He is an American comic book writer and novelist who has been published by Image Comics, Marvel Comics, and Dark Horse. He is the braaaaains behind the Walking Dead series and the super-hero comic Invincible. He has also written some fiction spin-off books to the Walking Dead and a number of scripts for the Walking Dead TV show and its spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead.

Outcast is a horror/supernatural graphic novel about demonic possession that Robert Kirkman is working on with illustrator Paul Azaceta. The first issue of the comic was released in June 2014. The comic has received positive reviews and was adapted into a television show which premiered in June 2016.

Outcast tells the story of a man called Kyle Barnes who lives a life of solitude. Kyle has had bad experiences his whole life with several of his loved ones falling victim to demonic possession around him. It started in his childhood with his mother Sarah.

Before his mother became possessed she and Kyle had a great relationship. Kyle remembers those days as being bright and happy. And then one day everything changed. His mother stopped smiling and turned violent toward him. Their house fell into disrepair and the happy, bright days ended. For the longest time Kyle wondered what had happened to his mother to make her change.

Was it him? Had he done something wrong?

Did she hate him?

One day, Kyle snaps. When his mother hits him he loses his cool and hits her back and in the commotion, he is able to exorcise the demon living inside her. His mother is left in a comatose state after the demon flees. Kyle is horrified and left wondering what the heck did he do? The guilt he feels is terrible.

Years later, the same thing that happened to his Mum happens to his wife, Allison. Kyle walks in on his possessed wife attacking their daughter Amber. He exorcises the demon from his wife and manages to get her off their daughter but in the aftermath is accused of beating them both up.

Robert Kirkman uses demonic possession in Outcast to tell a story that is about domestic violence. After his marriage to Allison breaks down, Kyle moves back into his childhood home and shuts himself off from the world. He blames himself for what happened to his mother and Allison and fears if he gets too close to other people that it might happen again. When Kyle isn't brooding in his house he goes and visits his comatose mother who has been in the hospital ever since he hit her.

Kyle Barnes is not a bad man. He is an Outcast. An Outcast is a person who has a natural ability to cast out demons with his touch, blood and tears. He has a natural light in him that repeals demons. It is why his possessed mother hated him so much. He isn't a bad person or a violent man. He is a light that shines in the darkness.

Robert Kirkman has described Outcast as an "epic" horror story that he hopes will give his readers a real good scare. It shares a lot in common with the TV show Supernatural.

Outcast is not suitable for little kids. I would recommend it for kids aged 15 years and up. It has some pretty scary scenes. Outcast Book One is a hardback edition of the comic. It contains issues 1 through to 12 and was released in November, 2016.

It retails for between $22 and $70.
